Important information

Prednisone treats many different conditions such as allergic disorders, skin conditions, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, or breathing disorders.
You should not take prednisone if you have a fungal infection anywhere in your body.
Steroid medication can weaken your immune system, making it easier for you to get an infection. Avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Do not receive a "live" vaccine while using prednisone.
Call your doctor at once if you have shortness of breath, severe pain in your upper stomach, bloody or tarry stools, severe depression, changes in personality or behavior, vision problems, or eye pain.
You should not stop using prednisone suddenly. Follow your doctor's instructions about tapering your dose.

Short-term side effects include high blood glucose levels, especially in patients who already have diabetes mellitus or are on other medications that increase blood glucose (such as tacrolimus), and mineralocorticoid effects such as fluid retention. Additional short-term side effects include

-insomnia,
-euphoria
-rarely mania.

Long-term side effects include

-Cushing's syndrome
-weight gain
-osteoporosis
-glaucoma
-type II diabetes mellitus
-depression upon withdrawal.

The thing you have to understand is that prednisone affects almost all of the immune system. It is indeed effective in inflammatory disorders. But it is converted to prednisolone in the liver which is the active drug and also a steroid.

Some other side-effects may be hyperactivity and rashes.
Should you spot any of these symptoms- do NOT hesitate to inform your doctor.

I have taken prednisone 20 mg several times and it always seems to work. The only major side effect I have encountered is drowsiness. I usually felt the way Benedryl makes me feel, just drougy and tired.

Hope this helps.

Prednisolone has minimal side effects when taken for a short course. Most of its effects occur with long term use.
