Good question. Thanks for asking it. There are a lot of people in this forum who get mixed up.
"aeroplane" is the original English spelling for powered heavier than air flying machines. This distinuishes them from Airships, Blimps and dirigibles which are lighter than air.
The word derives from Greek "aero" (to do with the atmosphere) and "planos" (wanderer).
In the United States they officially changed the spelling in the 1930's to "airplane" because they had a period of "simplifying" spelling. If this US spelling is used in the UK it's either by an American or someone who has no grasp of spelling (rather like someone using color instead of colour).
On both sides of the Atlantic it is acceptble to call flying machines of any type an "aircraft".
"airoplane" is a typo.
Stephen doesn't teach English in China, he teaches American. There are too many differiences for it to be the same langauge.

European English is aeroplane.
American English is airplane.
I think that airoplane is a mis spelling of aeroplane.

Aeroplane. It originates from the term aero as in an aerofoil being the shape of a wing.
Aircraft is acceptable but airplane is just plain lazy!

Aeroplane is the good old fashioned British name.
Airplane is the American equivalent.
Aircraft is a suitable compromise.
