To get going, a certification in programming is a good start. At the sun site, http://www.sun.com/training/certification/java/index.xml
you'll see the different paths you can take to get this certification. You start of with the basic programming certification SCJP and in many cases gives you quite a bit of credibility as a capable Java Programmer. A couple of good books to help you to this end are "Head First Java" from Oreilly and "SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 5 Study Guide" printed by Osbourne and written by Kathy Bates. There is one test to pass to gain this certification. To be certified as a Java developer by SUN, you have to take an additional test that requires you to successfully complete a programming project to pass. I hope you are successful!
