I'm shipping out on june 14th as Damage Control. I want to become a firefighter after serving. To increase my chances, I want to get my EMT. Can I get my EMT while serving, or am I going to need to get that at a community college of some sort after I am done with the navy?

Yes, there is a way to do it. After boot camp and "A" school you can log on to USMAP.cnet.navy.mil and enroll in journeymen programs. You can also do your EMT training at a C.C. in the area you are stationed in. Your Tuition Assistance will cover the costs of the classes that are required, If you go to a ship, work on getting your ESWS pin as soon as possible because some of the prerequisites for the pin are Advanced Damage Control and Advanced 3M. You also have to do alot of Medical training. If you go to shore duty you may work at a base fire department and get you EMT training that way. Hope this helps but make sure you do your research on getting the proper qualifications. If you have any questions please feel free to ask me.

DC is not that bad of a rate. What did he want to do? DC guys on a ship have a pretty cool job. They get great training on welding which could provide great job skills in the civilian world. They are also the primary fire teams known as the Nucleus Fire Party. If there is any kind of emergency like flooding, fire, smoke, anything like that the DC's respond and handle business. For shore duty the teach fire fighting schools, and a few other things. its not a bad rate at all. Email me if you have any Q's. I'm in the aviation side of the Navy, but I know some DC guys from my first Command I still talk to. I could relay some info.

Why don't you go Navy Corpsman?

I think they get the qualifications for a Paramedic.

An Army Medic gets the quals for EMT and a Navy Corpsman is much better.

The OS1 gave you a great answer !! Welcome Aboard Shipmate-to-be !!

I was an airdale: AW (Aviation Air-Warfare Systems Operator), and had to take alot of First Aid courses as part of my SAR training...

Several of us then went to Base Medical and did the Navy EMT course while off-duty. One guy then took the California State EMT program & test... he became a LA Firefighter
