Yes. The holes allow water and nutrients to get directly to the roots. It's a pain to do, but worth it.

Yeah, it allows air and water to get into the ground easier. By having the holes in the ground, it allows the water to soak in the ground easier (less water run-off) which can help your lawn when it gets dry.

The size of your yard is what really determines whether doing it is hard or not. For small yards, all you have to do is just wear golf shoes or aerating sandals when you walk behind the push mower in your yard. For large yards, you really need an aerator which removes plugs of dirt out of your yard.

Absolutely yes. It helps to get water to the grass roots. keeps the ground "loose" so grass can grow better. Plug aerator is the best.

yes, but anyway you do it, its hard work...seed, fertilizer, water and everything else, will get down to the roots easier with the aerated lawn.
