When I read the headline on secondsout.com, I thought it was just some mistake. But then I read the article, and was shocked and gutted for Diego and his family. Apparently Vic Darchinyan, who was very close to him, was very shocked when the news was broken to him.

I happen to have a very good imagination, and am good at envisioning things in my mind. Unfortunately this time, I read the following on secondsout.com: “He’s laying there as we speak with a helmet on his head under a sheet. It appears he was thrown a great distance,” and all I could see was Diego, helmet still on, sheet over him, being wheeled away from the scene of the crash by paramedics.

These tributes were also on secondsout.com. No doubt there will be countless more:

"Current IBF/IBO flyweight world champion Vic Darchinyan, who is also promoted by Gary Shaw, was shocked when told of Corrales passing.

“Chico and I spent some time together last year before my fights,” said Darchinyan. “I remember we were in the sauna one day talking as we were losing some weight. He was a nice guy and I liked him. Boxers are not scared of anything. He was a great fighter and a great man. I will miss him. He was so young. I can’t believe it.”

Guyana born Gairy St Clair lost a close twelve round points decision to Corrales in August 1998 in Sacramento in an IBF world title eliminator.

“He was just a young kid. I can’t believe he’s gone,” St Clair told SecondsOut. “Very sad. I remember when we fought. He was so tall for someone at junior lightweight. He was very soft spoken. I remember he was studying to be a chef back then. It’s sad to hear it. Diego was a cool guy.”

Rest in peace, Diego. You were a great entertainer, a fearless warrior in a potentailly dangerous sport, and will no doubt be inducted into the Hall Of Fame soon.

Great loss to boxing and a heart rending loss to his family, my prayers go out to him and his. My wife is a physical therapist, and not a day goes by that she doesn't mention the dangers of motorcycles. She has worked with countless motorcycle accident survivors and is steadfastly against my owning one.

Diego was one of the best, and ducked no one in his career, he will be missed.

You know Brent I had posted the same question this morning after I heard it on TV this morning. This is the same man who gave us the best fight in 2005. By getting up from two knockdowns to KO Castillo in the best fight at 147 and below. This is sad because I hoped he could turn his career around after 3 losses in a row the final being a bad loss to Clottey. R.I.P. Chico you will be missed by your true boxing fans.....

Devon P is right...he will definitely be missed by boxing fans. I loved to see him fight, he was an exciting boxer to watch and this is truly a sad day for real boxing fans and his family.
Of course, I didn't know him personally, but we met him in LA at the Juarez - Barrera fight...he was very nice to us fans. We got his autograph on a boxing glove.

RIP Chico

It's almost unbelievable that he is gone. I definitely wasn't expecting to come home from work this morning to hear that one of boxing's most exciting fighters was killed. It is a very dark day in the sport of boxing and he will be greatly missed.
