Hunting is a skill kittens learn from their mothers. If they are not taught to hunt, they will usually be bad at it.
There was a PBS cat show a while back showing a mother cat nursing her babies with her friend, a pet mouse, climbing on her and the kittens. The commenter said that these kittens would probably never see mice as prey because their mother didn't.
A side note, why bother hunting with slaves who can open a can of food for them?

Why would they?
The majority of domestic cats are well-fed and have no need to hunt - most that do only do it for fun and don't end up eating the prey.
If you want your cat to catch more mice you'll have to starve him/her - and you're not about to do that are you!

if you are talking about a house cat its because they have enough food already and will only catch one out of instinct if they see one.
but if you lived on a farm with cats (like me) and they were outside all the time they would be "hunting" instead of lazing around and if they 'smell' a rat or mouse they will hunt it down.
unless you have a mouse plague at home I wouldn't suggest withdrawing the food supply of your cat.
Cheers.
