Idea for a book I had 17/18 yrs ago: Gov't gets tough on drug cartels, cartels react by arming their clientelle, telling them to kill people for free drugs, in order to cause anarchy and get Gov't to back down.Has this been scenario'd? Is this why drug cartels are largely ignored?

Sorry Curtis B, 'thoug the two big cartels ended, lots more took their place: weeds rather than rocks. More needs to be done to end it, but Special Forces illegal in this.

Interesting... it's almost worked in MEXICO hasn't it ?

I don't think it would work in the USA, because the good-citizens would react appropriately as guaranteed by our 2nd Amendment rights

Tough question! In all likelihood the fuzz etc have given a lot of thought to taking down the drug cartels. How to do it!?

Problem one - inside every police unit there is someone in the pay of the drug cartels.

Problem two - lack of willingness to shoot to kill drug cartel members on sight.

How to overcome the problem of dealing with drug cartels. If a government really want to do this, send in the Marines. Here in UK the SAS. Kill.

Actually there is a sci-fi novel I read years ago that has a similar scenario. The Mafia take over and become the Government and the remnants of the US Government forces operate out of Iceland and are the bad guys. The Mafia is so good at governing that everyone in the States has the standard of living of the Edwardian era upper classes. Unfortunately I can't remember the title of the book.

In the real world between 30% and 50% of inward capital investment in the States and Europe is estimated to come from criminal sources.

Drug cartels aren't being ignored, they were dismantled in Columbia in the nineties. Between the Cali and Medellin cartels being broken, and the price of crack dropping like a rock (no pun intended), the violence associated with the drug fell too. No one wants to get shot for what amounts to an avon route. So the war on drugs has shifted to stopping meth.

The plotline sounds a bit like the second Robocop movie.
