Hi everyone

I usually have my hair in braids alot.

I noticed that if I look at one of the braids, there are a few strands of hair that stick out of the braid...

are these split ends, how can I prevent them, I know I have to trim my hair every 6 weeks or so.

Thanks

I am black, so my hair is natural,

no weave, no chemicals, it is completely natural.

If I have it out, it is like an afro.

It has a natural shine and sometimes it is really straight when I take it out of the braids.

everyone has split ends - apart from maybe guys with short hair - the ends sticking out arent neccesarily split - but they maybe broke off or its new hair growing etc. if you hold up a bunch of hair and take a look, you can find the split ends - you will ssee them as they are literally a piece of hair split into two or more very fine pieces. the only way to keep them at bay is to have regular trims but they are literally all over the hair - even after having it trimmed, you will still find them if you look hard enough!

it's great that you get your hair trimmed so often! It's probably quite healthy. The ONLY thing that takes care of split ends is a good trim! DO NOT be conned into an advertisement for a product that says it "cures" or "seals" split ends. There's absolutely no product that can do that. I've seen a lot of people waste a lot of money on serums and "sealing" conditioners that offer false promises. They just coat the hair with a wax or a silicone that make the hair temporarily slick so it looks "sealed". Even people who are growing their hair out need trims, even if it's just a half centimeter.

If your hair is very long, it shows off more that you have hairs that have begun growing at different times. The hairs that stick out of the edges/sides of the braids may simply be perfectly healthy younger, shorter hairs. Look at the tip of the hair. Split is split. Perfect young hair tip is fine and gradually gets thicker.

Magnification will clarify the differences between split ends, properly trimmed strands, young hair tips and otherwise abused hair.

Hair that's trimmed/cut with less than totally sharp scissors is crushed and it ready to split, even if it had been healthy before. Hair can also be damaged by rubber bands, too-sharp barrettes and even by bobby pins.

Prevent split ends by eating a good balance of nutritious foods, not frying or otherwise making your hair brittle and by not physically abusing your hair. If you see a split end, trim it with *sharp* scissors. If strands aren't damaged, leave well-enough alone or trim with *sharp* scissors to maintain a desired length limit.

When my hair was in braids this would sometimes happen to me it doesn't neccessarily mean that you have splits ends it just might be that your hair is too short to be braided into the plaits so it sticks out. As long as you keep trimming your hair and condition it you should be fine. Also try not to have your hair braided too tightly as this can weaken the roots of your hair and cause more damage.

Well....If the splitting happen at the end of ur hair then they split ends but if it happens at the middle then its just a strand of hair that is short and can not be braided into ur hair

Don't worry, everyone gets them and it does sounds like they might be split ends. If you catch them early enough you will be able to see exactly where the hair has split into two on the strand of hair. The best thing to do is trim your hair regularly, which you already do, and don't use elasticated hairbands unless they are covered (by material, etc.).

Yes, you have them and yes everybody gets split ends. Trimming your hair will keep the ends healthy and the splits at bay but you'll never be completely split end free.

yes they are split end also look at the bottom of your hair too see if any are split in two, these can also be caused by too much brushing, styling etc

I have pretty long hair, I like them but I actually think I would have them reduce short in about some two years
