Well, all I can say is that it didn't for me.
I had cancer, my son's nervous system didn't develop properly and he didn't survive until birth and my Mother died when I was fairly young.
And while undoubtedly those things influenced my 'becoming' the person I am today, a belief in God wasn't included.
Which isn't to say it couldn't happen. Or vice versa.

Maybe. But it could also convert a theist into an atheist. I'd like to see the stats on that.

I've had a few VERY close calls, and many people that I love have died. Why would the fact of death make me start believing in god?

Hasn't worked for me, and I have been shot at a number of times, had a car accident and spent 4 days in ICU after a carbon monixide poisioning ordeal.

It just all depends. If you mean that if they die and come back, just depends on where they went and what they saw. Most of the time satan will step in and because the person is an atheist will make it look nice and sweet and all, to keep them in their present state of mind. However, if God knows this persons heart and knows they are searching, he may give them a glimpse of hell to make the atheist change his mind.

And if we're made in the image of god, we would never die.
and when i reread this there is something telling me that the answer yes. but I still don't believe in god.

Having had a few I can safely say 'no'.
EDIT:
People I loved have died. Didn't make any difference as far as faith goes either.

if the person was 'out' long enough to see angels, the bright light and feel the intense love of God, yes.
