i have a huge emergency/dilemma: i am in china right now where there is only one western-trained vet in the whole city who turned out to be a complete cad and bully. how safe might it be for my approx 5month old kitten to travel by air back to canada (11hr) if he is now sick? Mango passed his medical examination on the 28th and was screened for FPV.
symptoms: vommiting, loss of appetite (we are now force feeding him) and lethargy. the vet prescribed him some medicine to treat a general infection (antibiotics and anti-nausea)
he was a lovely, active little kitten until last week. last wed evening, we found what we now suspect was remains of his regualar kibble. he was drinking normally but thursday and friday refused to eat his kibble though ate human food eagerly (meat, egg, bread, even some sweetcorn he stole from my salad). saturday morning we noticed him throwing clear saliva and also found the remains of the egg he was fed last night. we brought him to the vet immediately - his temperature was just a tad high, stool a bit soft and stomach a bit gassy but otherwises normal. no obstructions or knots could be felt in his guts. when we got home, he gulped down the tuna we gave him and then threw up everything immediately. the second round i fed him slowly and after half an hour he threw up a little. otherwises he was still fairly active up to this point despite vommiting occasionally though obviously complaining lots! and drinking water normally.
on sunday, he suddenly became very listless, refused to touch tuna or egg offered to him. we started force-feeding him through syringe with a watered-down eggyolk mixture (can only manage around 10ML). he usually throws up a little back of it, and was drinking noticably less water by himself so we also try to get a couple syringes in him. vommited total of 4X
Monday was the same though abit better with drinking water himself but still very lethargic and quiet, vommited 2x after feeding.
Tuesday (today) the vet released his health certificate but is otherwises disinterested in checking up on Mango before we are due to fly on saturday.. he was a bit more active this morning but still very lethargic. this morning was dry heaving/hacking but did not actually vomit.
i cant change my flight because i myself am having health complications and need to go home asap.

Yes i would say it is safe for you to take him back to canada, you must make sure before you do that he has ample water explain that he has been given the all clear from the vet but you are concerned that he may not drink himself as he doesnt travel well and ask if you would be able to attend to him, be careful you dont panic them with regards his illness they may refuse him on the aeroplane! And you dont want that, obviously he has eaten something that has upset his tummy and the best thing to do is totally starve him of food let him get the bug out of his system either by being sick or the other, every hour gently coax water into him nothing else, medication of course if you have been prescribed keep checking his coat on the back of his neck nip and pull up his skin if it springs back into place you are doing a good job of keeping up his fluids if it is slow in going back down he is severley dehydrated, maybe if that is the case the vet could drip him to rehydrate him just before he travels then he can be attended to by your more competant vet in canada, i understand your situation totally and in your situation i would just risk it and take him he doesnt have a future in china if you have to leave him does he, please if you are able please let me know how he is and if i can do anything else even if it means me ringing my vet and accessing some advice off her i will do that for you and keep you updated. take care both

What a dreadful situation to be in. I feel for you. I think all you can do is monitor his progress until Saturday and make a decision then. This may sound a bit harsh but if he makes it through until saturday he probably stands a reasonable chance of surviving the flight.

Good luck to you and Mango.

I would definitely call your vet first. But I would say with their age, that no you should not give them the medicine. They are young enough that they will adjust in the car. Keep taking them for short drives if you have time. We find that with our cats, they like the air on and no music. Keeps them calmer. And if we let them out and hold them that helps too or at least touch them through the carrier to let them know that you are still there. Good luck.

MAke sure the cat travels with you, and not in cargo.
Ask you vet about an IV before you leave, to help keep mango hydrated.
Remember mango will need a place to pee on the trip.
Get him to a Canadian vet asap

You've answered your own question really, friend. What choice have you got?
Sadly, I wouldn't hold out much hope of your kitten surviving such a long flight. Sorry to say this but prepare yourself.
The only other question is how much he will suffer. Look into your heart and ask yourself if you want to put him through this. Best of wishes. xx

Try feeding him mashed boiled chicken or sth. Raw egg induces vomit. I would go back to Canada, just make sure that the kitten will travel in the cabin with you, not in the luggage compartment!
