In deed it is, and they look awesome ! A few years ago I bought an Olympus digital camera 3.2 millions pixel and 10x
optical zoom, which was maximum at a time...I visit mountains
frequently; must say my Olympus is fairly good camera...In my personal experience a powerful zoom is a good solution, I believe 10x is just on the farthest side ( there are even more powerful like 12x or even 18x that comes with newest Olympus camera which also has 28mm ( wide angle )...combined with the powerful zoom your possibilities are nearly endless...however even with built-in stabilizer a zoom that's very powerful will hardly make a good picture without a triangle stance for camera, another problem is light conditions...When taking shots with zoom, best results are obtained in perfect light conditions ( sunny weather )...
I would suggest you a camera with at least 5x zoom lenses and 5 millions pixels, preferably Canon or Olympus; previously mentioned Olympus is a great camera, but it's a kind of bulky compared with compact cameras, which come handy when you have to make a snap shot...so in my opinion it is whether Olympus or Canon !

If you think there is the slightest possibility you might want to make prints, be sure to take your pics of the mountains at the highest resolution your camera offers!

RAW gives you more options in the computer than jpegs, if your camera supports that format and you have any desire to work on your prints in the computer.

If this is your first trip to the mountains, my suggestion to you would be not to take a lot of grand vistas unless you have a point of interest in the foreground. Those pictures will all look pretty much the same (boring) when you look at them after the trip. If you're looking to capture mountains reflected in a lake, early morning is usually the best time. Before the wind picks up.

Best if shot in RAW, however any camera can take pictures of mountains. The bad news is to get a real nice shot you will need to get a digital filter to contrast the whites and sharpen the total contrast. These are not real cheap, depends on your camera and lens size.

However I have seen side by sides with and without filters and without looks kindof dreary and dull.

You must use 28mm lens and 35mm lens for taking mountains, not even that I could use 12mm lens also the best one.

Yes you can, a panoramic picture would look nice, that's 2 or more pictures stitched together, plenty of software out there
to do it.you could also try a wide angle lens.happy snapping.

nope. hills can be photographed beautifully, but mountains are impossible to photograph. as soon as it gets over like 500 ft. tall, it just disappears from your lcd screen.
