Most bridesmaids do pay for their own dresses.

It's proper and costumary for the Bride to pay for her bridesmaids dresses. It happens a lot that the bridesmaids end up paying because of a tight budget. So if you can afford it, pay for them, remember they are doing you an honor by standing up there with you. If you can't afford the dresses you've picked out, maybe evaluate what you've picked, see if you can reduce your price or come up with a percentage they can contribute. Sometimes your bridesmaid won't mind paying anyway...girls these days seem to think if they are going to be a bridesmaid they HAVE TO buy the dress. But technically it's the brides responsibility.

Yes, that is typically an expense the bridesmaids incur. If you really want to be in the wedding, and the bride really wants you in it too, but you can't afford to pay for the dress, perhaps the bride may help you with the cost, or pay for it for you.
Discreetly discuss it with her if you have any problems.

Are you the bride or bridesmaid? If you are the bridesmaid, you pay for your own dress. That's part of the deal that you agree with when you agree to be in someone's wedding.

Yes, of course. Every wedding I was in the bride paid for our dresses. It's a nice courtesy to do so. The dresses are for "one time only." The bridesmaids will never wear them a second time.

I have been in a few weddings and have always paid for my own dress. One wedding I was not in, but was at the grooms parents paid for my cousins dress because her mother was not in the position to pay for it. I would suggest that you expect your bridesmaids to pay for their own dresses, but if you know it would be a financial burden on someone you could offer PRIVATELY to pay for it.

I think it is more polite, you are asking them to do you a favour, so why should they be out of pocket? I'm paying for my bridesmaids dress, shoes, hair, make up, flowers, and for a day trip to a spa with me the week before the wedding. I don't see why she should have to pay for anything.

Yes, traditionally b'maids pay for their own dresses.

Unless you were told or led to believe that someone else was picking up the tab, or if you were told the dress would be between 100-180, and it's 300, then you are paying!
