MS SQL Server is a database platform.

A database is a peice of software which stores information in tables, and allows quick and easy locating of that information so that it can be viewed, updated, or deleted.

Tables within the SQL Server look like Excel Sheets in Microsoft Excel (or your favorite spread sheet). The difference is that while Excel is made for showing all the data at once, databases are made to store the data, and show you only the data relivent to your request.

Any web site which has a way to log into the web site (such as the Yahoo! Answers site, MySpace, Amazon, etc) has a database behind the site which holds your username and password, your preferences, posting history, etc.

As a home user you probably do not have any use for Microsoft SQL Server.

It's a enterprise-scale database.

If you have no idea what it means or what it does, I'll have to assume you got it through illegal means, since a "normal" home users, even a power user, would have no use for such a program.

Even if you are just learning it for a job, you don't need the whole server installed, just the "Express" version and the management console.

EDIT: Well, you can read about it here. Suffice to say, it's NOT something a single user would need.
