To those who said those rights are given forgranted everywhere, thats true, but the point here is Islam as a religon gave those rights to women from over 1400 years ago, and no other religon has done that, rather people just followed what they want and ignored their religons, and thats how they got those rights .It just proves that Islam is the true faith. And no Islam does not opress women in any way, it is just the narrow-minded mentalities of some Islamic extremist governments and some extremely traditional people. So dont judge the Islamic faith based on what you see some followers do.

Tracy:
Some do not follow the religion but follow a corrupted interpretation, which is not the pure religion but their individualistic interpretation of the religion. You cannot look at what a few do and then put a religion on trial because of those peoples twisted interpretation. That would be unfair, biased and unrealistic, and just plain daft.
Viz: A very few unfortunately leave the religion because of really what I have said above, in answer to Tracy's comment. They have had some bad experience from a few corrupted individuals or from their observation of a few corrupted individuals. They have turned their back on their faith, this is sad indeed. About death threats - again, they have become corrupted who would do that. This is not of the religion.
Jill: Mystifieds summary of the rights of women in islam need to be read in context to understand them fully because the husband is also the head of the household in Islam and men and women have also been given different roles in Islam as with Christianity. They are not terms or dictates, Mystified has merely summarised some of the 'finer points' that she thinks honours womens rights. Grantation of a divorce is not just like that but there has to be valid legitimate grounds, as in any 'Christian' society. You just need to bear in mind that bits and pieces have to be understood in context but the big picture is just too big to explain here and I am not one that can do that even. About the movie again. Should I say the David Berkowitz (aka 'Son of Sam') 'says it all' (a term you have used) with respect to Christianity and Christians. I apologise for having to quote this individual to make a point but I am just trying to say that 'One bad apple does not an whole bunch make'. I certainly would not view Christians in a bad light on the basis of individuals such as this for instance. There are many other Christians that I like and admire as there are Muslims that I also like and admire, and also people of other faiths/belief systems. This is what my religion (Islam) teaches me. Because the pure religion of Islam emphasises complete fairness and good treatment to ALL human beings, without discrimination, and also offers the same dignity to animals. Islam does not permit any differentiation in the treatment of others on the basis of colour, race, sex, religion or nationality. Dignified and Noble it is indeed. Peace.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) said that “Whoever hurts a non Muslim, I shall be his complainant and for whoever I am a complainant, I shall ask for his right on the day of Resurrection.” (Hadith)
Peace.

The rights you mention such as education, property, work, vote, choosing a husband of her choice, divorcing, custody of children, getting sexual satisfaction etc. are taken for granted in all civilised societies & no one thinks that a woman has been done any favour by having these rights.
On the other hand Islam gives a woman HALF of =what a man gets by way of property. I do not know the value of the right to vote for women in an Islamic society as almost all these are not democracies so a vote is redundant.
A woman gets only the meher amount in case of a divorce (which in many cases is a pittiance) while in civilised societies she gets half of what the man has.
Divorce for a woman is extremely difficult in Islam & carries a lot of stigma & in most cases a woman finds it extremely hard to remarry. Not so in other societies.
I dont know how she can have a husband of her choice when in most Islamic countries there is practically zero interaction between sexes. & so on.
Edit;-You said it!. Islam gave women rights that were ahead of their time 1400 years ago. I agree 100%. But now times have totally changed & most of those rights are far far behind of the times we live in. The proof is for all to see. Check out any muslim society and you yourself will see what I mean.
And by what do you find wrong about "traditional"people. If they chose to follow Islam to the letter why do you imply it is a negative thing?

I'm not Muslim, and:
1. I have that.
2. I have that.
3. I have that.
4. I have that.
5. I have that.
6. I have that.
7. I have that (Islam may have given it but women still can't vote in two Islamic countries)
8. I have that.
9. I have that.
10. I have that.
11. I have that, but as a true woman I would choose to support my family.
12. I have that.
13. I have that (in Western society, the children usually go to the woman unless their mother has mental or other issues)
14. I have that.
I'm sorry, but I don't think you're saying anything original here. These things Islam gave women might have been fresh and new during the prophet's time, but they're not now. Becoming Muslim in 2007 would only restrict a woman's rights, not enhance them. Times have changed.

It is very pleasing to see something positive about Islam mentioned here after reading two questions filled with hatred towards them.
I'm atheistic, but I do respect Islam. Such a peaceful religion. It's a shame we only hear about the nutjobs and not about the things like you've listed here.

Hope they understand that Islam has given us all the rights.
Some of them has written has asked, if it is practised in all the Muslim countries or not, so a country is not involved in these matters. The women has all these Rights mentioned above and it is they are given by their parents.
Regarding Hijab, it is for our modesty and we proudly wear it.
Thanks for posting this question.........
