I have had panic attacks since 1970. Someone taught me this way of breathing, called a cleansing breath, that does help me. New medicines are now available for this, too. They treat the brain chemicals that may be the cause of this for some of us.

Take a deep breath, hold it for 2 to 3 seconds, then let it out slowly through pursed lips. Repeat three times. If you can find a relaxation tape, do the breathing first, then follow the tapes. The tapes are mostly done before bed, while the cleansing breaths can be done any time, any where. When you are lying down, imagine a white light slowly glowing as it travels through you.

Another thing that made a difference for me was acupuncture. After 10 treatments I found I had "runner's high." It was great. You do have to keep having acupuncture every so often, depending on your needs, to keep the effect.

Breatheasy was developed to lower blood pressure but it is also very effective for anxiety and panic attacks. It uses a method of slow breathing combined with music. If you use it 15 minutes a day it will help relax you and lower general levels of stress and anxiety.
After a while you will internalize the breathing method and then you can use it whenever you need. That will also put you in touch with the deep feelings of relaxation you get from doing it.
But what's really useful is you can download the audio tracks in mp3 (or get the CDs) and carry them around in an ipod or other player. Then you've got it right there if you get a panic attack.
I find that if I can control my breathing I can stop the panic attack.
Check the website in the resource box below for an online demo and free instructions. Don't be put off that it's all targetted toward blood pressure. I wrote to them about my experiences with the program and they say they'll be adding a section on using it for panic attacks.

When having a panic assault or anxiousness assault it seems like you're having a middle assault... Get a brown paper bag and breath out and in consistently till you believe your self calming down... Have a lie down and inform every person to depart you on my own.. If humans attempt to speak to you it could actually make it worse. If its quite unhealthy name the nhs helpline. Look on their internet site too. Type in nhs helpline in google
