My son is 13 yrs old and still has some baby teeth. What's bothering me is that he has his second canine tooth that has come down without loosing his baby one first. It's been like that for months now and is completely through. Just recently its done the same on the other side only it's just showing. He says when he touches it with his tongue it hurts. I have booked him into the dentist. Do you think he will need braces? I'm not sure what to expect. I took him to the dentist when it first started to come through and was told to leave it and let nature take it's course the baby tooth will fall out. But it's not even loose now. Are they likely to remove the primary teeth?

Usually, retained baby teeth that are still present after its corresponding adult teeth erupted can be extracted, and that's the end of that. If the retained baby tooth has caused a permanent tooth to erupt in a crooked fashion (what we call "ectopic eruption"), then orthodontics might be indicated.

Your dentist will be able to tell you for sure after an evaluation.

Good luck!

Maybe.

It depends on how "salvagable" the adult teeth are.

If the tooth that hurts is the baby tooth, it is probably starting to come loose. If it is the adult tooth, it would likely be irritated.

Easiest thing to do is have a chat with the dentist before and after the appointment and ask all the questions you can think of. If he becomes defensive or condescending, pay your bill, and file a formal complaint with the State / Provincial board. Then send him a registered letter demanding he send all copies of your family's charts and information to your new dentist.

i had some baby teeth that i did not lose until i was an adult. i did not have a permanent tooth above some of the baby teeth. eventually i had them removed and got implants in their place. in my case, they baby tooth had to be extracted first and then the implant done. they told me that the baby tooth was difficult to remove because they begin to sort of fuse to the bone as we age. i did not have them removed when i was younger because they were healthy teeth that were not decayed. i began to get one implant a year because it was covered under my dental insurance plan and i figured that they would eventually need to be replaced.

it's possible the tooth will have to be pulled. when I got braces, they actually had to pull 6 of my permanent teeth. the dentist will know what to do and will refer your son to an orthodontist if necessary.
