No, I don't think there is any need for people to own guns. In the UK we have had a few incidents where people have run amok with guns - Hungerford and Dunblane are the first that come to mind, but we don't seem to have as widespread a problem as the USA does with this, and I think the main reason for that is that guns are actually not that easy to come by in the UK unless you "know somebody". Most people don't.

Christ told the Disciples to get a self-defense weapon in the New Testament so there is no reason that person shouldn't be able to own a firearm.
