Keep their nails short...See this dog's toenails? http://www.lovemypet.com.au/images/81_body_picture.gif
You get them that way by trimming them just a little every week..

When they start to scratch at the door stop them and say " NO" by putting your hands on their paws, say " SPEAK " but make sure you have a treat to give them and do this a few times, it worked for us with our dog. Now shes barks or whines at the door. We went through a dozen screens before I tried this.
hope this helps

edit: Well then I would try the metal on the doors, they can't scratch through those. If you don't want to put them outside then try making them stay in one spot in the house as punishment. Kind of like treating them like a little kid, by putting them in the corner when they done wrong.

Next time be more specific about your question and you will get the answers you want the first time.

Is your dog still a pup? If so, you can easily train it from young not to do that. Otherwise I think the problem is that you need to realise that your pet dog is no machine with an on/off switch. You seem to be obviosly letting the dog in the house to roam freely but then force him out when you please. If thats not the case, you might be paying no attention to the animal when it is locked out & it seeks companionship. These are all speculations as you did not give much background on the dog & the exact circumstances like the breed of dog (different dog breeds have different temperements), the age of the dog, weather the dog is or is not allowed into the house during the day, does the dog have a companion?, etc etc etc..

My final advise is to spend more time training the dog.

I have to say the dogie door is the best Way, other then that ts god Ole fashion training to brake A bad habit , each and every time they go out you or another person must rep remand them that doesn't mean hit no no make the dog gently lay on side This is a submissive poison and say no. but you must be consistent it could take hours but you must not give in once you start.or THEY WILL WIN.... and the door they aren't that expensive under 100.00 if there's no glass

I have an idea.

Let them inside.

Seriously, though.

Dogs are social animals and it's cruel to keep them outside. Them scratching at the door is a not-so-subtle hint that they want to be with their family.

Plus, it's not safe outdoors. Weather, disease, wild animals, and escaped dogs can cause trouble or death for your pet.

If you won't bring them inside [which you really should], put a gate around your door or a metal screen.

Keep their nails trimmed and attach balloons to the outside of the door ... it usually only takes two or three nights where their scratches result in a BANG, and it scares the dog into stopping this terrible habit. Wishin' you luck! :)

With out cat we just got her nails trimmed regularly 'cos she has this habit of scratching on doors that are closed when she wants to pass through. Or just get a doggie door or something.

what i started to do was only put them outside when i could watch them. I have a doberman and a beagle. Of course the beagle doesn't cause as much damage and when the dobie would jump on the door or start to scratch it I would tell her get down. and then Nice. just like we did when we would teach her not to snatch treats out of our hands.. and eventually the nice worked.. with the door.. and treats... also i forgot to say when i would say down and nice.. i would point my finger so she would follow it down.
good luck, I know they are so stubborn sometime.

Place sheet metal over the portion they scratch! Some dogs will chew right through the wall! Just buy the sheet metal and some screws and save yourself allot of grief.

Er, perhaps don't send them outside then? There are alternatives to sending a dog outside to discipline, it doesn't sound as if this one is working!

What exactly are the dog's doing 'wrong'? Sending them outside is not a natural form of discipline that they would encounter in the pack, so I doubt they understand it.
