As a Firefighter/EMT, I have to speak Spanish, though it's not by choice. I also speak some French, and it's proven handy on occasion. You wouldn't believe how many people from Quebec refuse to speak English and yet travel to the southern part of U.S. So, yes, it's good to be bi-lingual. However, I think I'd like to see more people speak English or at least make an attempt to learn the language. If I visited a foreign country, I'd make every attempt possible to learn the language a little bit just so I could get around without relying on a guide.

In response to Ikeman, this country was founded by people who spoke French, Spanish, Dutch, English, Irish, several African languages (though theirs wasn't by choice), and German. The English had the most people however, that is why English was predominant in the early days of our country.

I beg to differ. In the USA it is important to speak only one language. As narrow minded as that seems, this country was founded by English speaking people and therefore the language of this country is English. If I travel or immigrate to a non-English speaking country I would be expected to learn the language. But since my traveling days abroad are over and I don't intend to immigrate to another country the only language I need to know is English. *sigh* Ironically I have a job where some of the employees that I work with have a hard time with English as they are here from Mexico, legally I might add.

The language spoken in America is English, The language Spoken in Spain is Spanish, The language in Mexico depends on what part of Mexico you are from. Mostly Spanish, but there are over 100 different Indian tribes with their own language. Mexicans seem to be the only ones to expect us to learn their language to speak to them. Russians don't expect us to learn their language, nor do Germans, or Chinese, etc. Mexicans are also the only ones expecting amnesty if they are here illegally. They expect a free education, and health care. They seem to be the only immigrants that are so assuming. Does anyone else see this as a problem?

Canadians have to be fluent in French because you could not get all of your provinces to have English be the official language. Lived there for 10 years and noticed the attitude problems the two different languages caused.

Speaking the English and Spanish languages is an advantage especially in business because customers consisting of both Mexicans and Amercians could be accommodated.

If I ever go to live where Spanish is the language I will learn to speak it. But as long as I live in USA I will speak English. Anyone who wants to come here and live should also.

Well, I work in the criminal justice system, and Spanish is important to know, yes. However, since there is only 1 official language in the US, I don't think we should have to learn, I think that the Hispanics should have to learn English. It makes a lot more sense, I shouldn't have to go to extra school to learn another language just to get a job.

When I was in the Army, I was stationed in two different foreign countries. I understood that, as a guest of those countries, I needed to try to learn some of their language. I did. It was the only right thing to do.

i can speak french and Arcadian french (creole), but i refuse to learn spanish i guess i'm just being stubborn but honestly if i decided to go to live in spain or mexaco i would learn the language just as those who come to america should learn our language it's not like we insisted that they come here and i think most of the illegal immigrants are creating a big problem for us them and their kids , where i live there are free classes legal or not they'll teach you english and all sorts of stuff about computers job training etc but if your from here and want a computer class you've got to pay, there was an article in our paper recently about the new mass in spanish at a local catholic church which is great but one of the spanish men they interviewed said he felt let down that us gringo's (that is the word they used in the article) would not talk to him in spanish ,that pissed me off if i went to live in a foreign country i would never expect the citizens to cater to my every need and learn english so they could speak to me so i really think it's wise for all nationalities (epically those who reside in america) to speak their native tongue but honestly don't expect us to have to learn all these languages they need to learn english
