this is a serious question. my cat meows before going to the litter box. and then keeps meowing while doing his business. it sounds like a complaining meow. i have never had a cat meow while going to the bathroom. i have another cat who never meows. but shell sometimes go over to him when he is meowing while in the box, then shell run away. today she ran away and hid in a bag.

is my cat just spoiled? or is he having a medical problem when he sometimes does that?

he is a persian cat, so i dont know if hes just being a brat, like he is too good to go to the toilet, since persians are kind of snooty. or if hes having a real problem.

thank you to all. im going to mention it to the vet. im glad that i got bored enough to mention it here. i had no idea he could die from a problem.

after going to the potty when he meows, i noticed he will come up to me afterwards and look distressed. i thought he was just being bratty. i have an appt soon for a shot and will get him checked then.

thanks again.

It possible he has urinary stones and they are painful. They also are deadly in a male cat because of blockage.

Call your vet and talk to him. It's better to be safe than sorry. Of course it may be just your cat's personality, but I wouldn't take a chance on it.

With the experience we've had with friend's cats and our own, you might want to have a urinalysis done on your cat. It may be that he has a UTI and is meowing to let you know that something is wrong. UTI's for cats can be very painful and if left untreated can cause other serious problems. However, if he gets tested and comes out with a clean bill of health, I would say your cat is just a weirdo and there's probably not much to worry about, but that is ONLY if he's been taken to the vet and had some tests done. Hope your kitty feels better!

Male cats have narrow urinary tracts and can get completely blocked when crystallization builds up in their urine. This is very painful and VERY SERIOUS! Your cat should be taken to the vet immediately. When completely blocked, the bladder will keep filling and not be able to empty. A vet will insert a urinary catheter which allows the bladder to empty. If this condition is not treated, the bladder will break, like a balloon popping, and cause a horrible death. Female cats also can get a blockage but it isn't as common as their urinary tracts are wider. One of my cats once had anal glands which became impacted, causing discomfort and needed the help of a vet. Perhaps your cat is suffering from one of these problems. With my multi-kitty household, after local vet hours I'm always calling an emergency vet clinic and driving off to see them when one of my cats behavior patterns change or is obviously sick. Please, please, get your kitty to the vet ASAP.

I have 12 cats and one of them always makes a noise when going to the toilet - digs like crazy and wails a lot. I have no idea why.
Just make sure that your cat is actually doing his business (not constipated) and that there is no blood or anything strange in his poop. If he meows every time then it is probably just a habit.

Time for a vet checkup. It's important to find out, because usually cats don't go in their box and announce, "Hey, look what I'm doin'!" "You can't come in here while I'm in here." "Yours won't smell nearly as bad as mine!" Cats will, however, meow if they're having pain associated with their use of the litterbox. The vet should be able to tell you.

I had a cat who used to do that years ago. I doted on her so much that I always let her in, I coul dnever bear to keep her shut out. She had a number of other eccentric habits as well, like chewing plastic for instance. Anything plastic, bags, most alarmingly the telephone flex etc. She would mumble away at it, purring ecstatically.

If the meowing is something new you should take him to the vet. Your cat could have a urinary tract infection or bladder stones.
