I believe that they generally recommend Not exfoliating more than 1-2 x per week as more than that may be too harsh on the skin. In Paula Begoun's book 'Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me', she suggests merely using Cetaphil liquid cleanser (which is great for my sensitive skin) and mixing a bit of baking soda in that for a gentle facial scrub.

Well first of all, what do you expect to be happening?
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the surface of your skin, so you can't visibly see anything coming off. You'll notice a difference in the feel though, so if you notice softer skin after a few days, then you're doing it right.
I really don't think there's a wrong way to exfoliate. What are you using, exactly?

Gently rub your skin in circular motions with your fingers. Also, depending on how coarse the exfoliator is you might want to only exfoliate for a few seconds with a heavy product, but a little longer with a more gentle product.
Just remember, go in circles gently and always rinse with warm water and pat skin dry with a soft cloth/towel!
Hope that helped!

You want to choose a good product that contains a gritty base to it. The finer the grain of the included exfoliating substance, the smoother your skin will appear. Remember you want to remove dull, dead skin without damaging the healthy skin underneath. Products with large "chunks" in it can potentially cause damage.

Get a stiff bristle brush and brush your skin in a circular motion. You will see all the dead skin cells come off and your skin will feel tingly.
