To make list a fighter must have toughness(ability 2 absorb punishment and come back 4 more) and roughness(ability 2 dish it out). Fighters like Tommy Farr, Joe Grim and Tex Cobb could take it, but couldn't dish out much. Conversely, fighters like Bob Satterfield and Earnie Shavers could dish it out but not take much. That said, my picks in no order:

Billy Petrolle- fought Jimmy McLarnin, Tony Canzoneri, Jack Kid Berg and Barney Ross. Won some, lost some, but gave them all hell.

Bennie Briscoe- ask Hagler and Monzon

Tom Sharkey- The poster boy for rough, tough contenders. Beat hall of famers Corbett, Choynski and McCoy. Battered Jeffries and Fitz badly before losing.

Oscar Bonavena- Floored Frazier twice. Gave him 25 rounds of hell in 2 fights. Battered Joe and Ali. Both called Oscar their toughest opponent.

Ace Hudkins- Only 1 ko loss(cut). Fought lightweight to heavy. Gave Mickey Walker hell. Beat heavyweight King Levinsky. 2nd best bodypuncher of era next 2 Dempsey

No question about it. I can name only one and only one who can beat the hell out of all those guys you just listed:

Rocco Francis Marchegiano
Heavyweight Champion 1952-1956
aka. Rocky Marciano "The Rock from Brockton"
Heavyweight Orthodox

An italian-american boxer known to be the only boxer to retire undefeated in his entire career. Being orthodox, he has a lot of weaknesses in skill but made up with his awesome power. Always doing whatever it takes to win, fighting aggressively just to avoid defeat. There is no doubt about it, Rocky Marciano is the toughest contender the world has ever seen!

I could consider Jack Dempsey as another, aka. the Manassa Mauler. Though fighting with good skill, always swaying his body left and right trying to get the bes out of his enemy, he gets pretty beaten up on occasion, loosing the championship in the "Fight of the Long Count" would be his greatest fall. But then again, when he wins, he wins with something to be proud of, finishing of with a great bang!

1 of the roughest toughest who came along had to be jerry quarry who happened to fight in the heavyweight divisions best era. another would be chuck 'bayon bleeder' wepner who was the basis for ''rocky''. then u got tony 'two ton' gallento a heavyweight who for his butterball appearence fought some of the best in his day. Bonavena was an animal. and 2day u have arturo gatti who brawls like every fight is in the 12th round. yes he was a champion not a contender but my goodness does he put on a show. oh and who can forget henry cooper?

Three people can top those fighters. Ali, the most famous boxer in history, Joe Frazier the arch rival of Ali. And Foreman, one of the jugernauts of the ring. Good question.
