When dogs scratch themselves, it feels real good. When you scratch a dog and you get it just right, he has an involuntary reaction (which is actually a scratching motion). But he doesn't have to scratch himself because you are doing it for him and he knows that.
My cats do the same thing when I give them my 'death by scratching' treatment. They purr like crazy and move their legs too when I get behind the ears..

Well it feels good to them but dont you move when someone tickles you? I would. I also think some might have a sensitivity or a nerve so it may just be that right spot.

its a reflex like when a doctor taps a kids knee with a mini mallet thingy and the leg moves. it just happens. good question though..

It's a reaction. They understand that's what it feels like when they do that with their leg, so when you do it for them, they're trying to continue the good feeling by doing that with their leg themselves.

Does that make sense?

They're ticklish there, and they are trying to scratch themselves. Or it could trigger a nerve reaction, kind of forcing them to.
