You should NEVER feed your dog cooked bones because they can splinter and harm your dog. When feeding your dog bones you want to give the dog raw bones.
Feeding a dog raw does give them the taste of blood and cause them to kill, that is an old wives tale.
Raw is best for dogs because the are carnivores.

In answering late - it really depends on what you feed, how much you feed, and where you buy. I have 2, 80 pound dogs - the younger gets around 2lbs a day whereas the older dog gets about 1 1/2 lbs of food a day - soon to be taken down to 1 1/4 lbs for winter. the health benefits far outweigh the cost for me. other benefits are my dogs don't stink, skin/fur or breath. teeth are always clean, coat soft and shiny, no big sticky/mushy poop to deal with. I probably spend about $100 a month on food for my dogs. They actually don't eat $100 worth of food a month. I fill my freezer on a monthly basis so they will never run out of food. Although I get most of my meat between $ .50 and .99 per pound I do buy a variety of not-so-common things to feed them that may cost a little more than a $1 a pound.

As long as the meat is fresh or taking right out of freezer and thawed you should be fine. Here is some of what I have been feeding my dog due to severe allergies and he is improving tremendously:
hamburger
chicken with bones
turkey with bones
turkey necks
chicken organs
beef organs
was feeding pork but found to be allergic so stopped
lamb (all parts)
fish with bones
tuna in a can in oil if on the road and have too
wild game (rabbit, deer, turkey, etc that are in season)
some people feed veggies as well and some don't if you don't you will need to add supplements to make sure dog gets all he needs. Since starting diet he has improved as mentioned above and has not vomited at all like he did on dog food. He has not gagged either like he did when eating dog food too fast.

You need to feed raw meaty bones, some meat, and organs.
The majority of the diet should be raw meaty bones. Key word here is meaty. The bones should have plenty of meat on them. A good starter is chicken. Avoid the wings as some dogs will have a tendency to not chew these well.
You need to feed a variety. You don't get a completely balanced meal with every bite, and your dog doesn't need to either. Balance comes over time (a few meals). Some examples of foods my dogs get: chicken, beef liver, whole fish, whole rabbit, ground goat, lamb, venison, chicken livers and gizzards, turkey, turkey gizzards, eggs shell and all, to name a few.
Avoid the leg bones of large animals, such as cows, and pigs.
To dispell some of the myths I just read here:
"Dogs have evolved to eat cooked foods"
FAlSE. Their digestive systems have not changed from their original state. They are ill suited to digest cooked foods. There has not been enough time for their digestive systems to evolve into eating cooked foods. Dogs were fed scraps, and what they could catch up until the invention of commercial food, around 60 years ago. 60 years is a far cry from what's needed to evolve to digesting that well.
"Raw meat will make a dog bloodthirsty"
FALSE. Eating what they are meant to eat is not going to cause your dog to become bloodthirsty and aggressive. In fact many owners report an IMPROVEMENT in behavior after switching to raw. My own dogs would much rather lick someone to death, there isn't an aggressive bone in their bodies.
"They need Kibble to clean their teeth"
Kibble is HORRIBLE for teeth. It does not clean them, in fact it leaves a nasty film on them. This leads to bad breath, gum disease and tooth decay. Animals dental health is horrible in this country. The crushing of bones, and chewing of raw meat will actually clean and strengthen teeth.
"Raw meat carries bacteria"
Sure it does. Should you practice safe meat handling? Of course you should. Will it make your pet sick? Not likely. Dogs digestive systems are designed to handle this bacteria load. Obviously you shouldn't feed them old rotting meat, but fresh meat will not make them sick. Freezing the meat will also help kill "ickies". This should especially be done if feeding wild game. Store bought meats can be fed fresh from the store.
For more myths about raw see http://www.rawfed.com/myths/index.html
You may also want to check out the Livejournal community called rawdogs. Even if you only visit the main page without joining the communty, you'll find a wealth of knowledge. If you do join, the people there are always happy to help people interested in feeding raw.
Good luck
**Heartworm is spread through mosquitos, not meat. And as stated above dogs digestive systems are designed to handle the bacteria load, and freezing kills a ton of stuff. Again use safe meat handling practices.

You can feed just about anything that ever walked. ran, swam or crawled. If you are switching to the MUCH healthier RAW diet there is a wealth of info available online and I also suggest Tom Lonsdales book called Work Wonders.
Good luck.

You should never give a dog Any kind of raw foods ! Only cooked meats ! I always was told not too, that they will get the smell and taste of blood and that is not a good thing! But i'm sure there is other reasons to avoid raw meat for dogs too! I heard it can make them mean because they smell the blood ! To be safe i never give mine raw meat !! I just wouldn't anyway ! I would rather cook it for them !! or give them bones from the pet store !! they have been cooked ! I wouldn't want my dog eating a bloody bone !!

Here's the deal - any unseasoned meat is great! Almost all veggies are fantastic. Rice and oatmeal are good too.
With meat though, you don't want it to be raw. Here's why. They have done studies because there was a big debate about if raw meat was better then cooked, because in the wild wolves ate it raw.
Well, our dogs are domesticated, and in being domesticated they ate cooked meat, so their systems changed to adjust to digesting cooked, not raw meat. They don't break it down as well if it's raw and don't utilize the protein as well, so all meat's great, just cook it!

The risk from contamination is very high in any meat that has been ground and been in a package. I would give the dog beef stew chunks. That is much better for his teeth too.

I always feed my dog chicken necks as well as a specially formulated dry food from the vet. the chicken necks are cheap and are great for there teeth and they love them. I haven't had a dog turn his/her nose up at them. Just make sure you add the dry food so they get all there nutritional value that they need
