Hi there Jonny, Here is the following information you need:
Coronary Angiogram
This test is also known as a catheter test.
What can the test show?
A coronary angiogram gives vital information about the blood pressure inside your heart, and how well the pumping chambers and valves are working.
It can also show where any narrowings in the coronary arteries are, and how severe they are.
What happens?
A catheter is passed into a vein or artery either in the groin or the arm through a fine tube called a sheath. Using X-rays the catheter is directed through the blood vessels and into the heart.
You will be linked to an ECG recorder which records your heart rate and rhythm throughout the procedure. The blood pressure will also be checked at the tip of the catheter.
A dye is injected into the catheter to show up the arteries suppling the heart. A serious of pictures are then taken.
Is there any risk?
A coronary angiogram is a relatively safe test. However you may experience the following:
• a hot, flushing sensation when the dye is put down the catheter.
• a small amount of bleeding when the catheter is removed.
• a bruise in the groin or arm.
Serious complications are very rare. The risk of having a heart attack, stroke or death is estimated at about 1 or 2 in every 1,000 people. The level of risk depend also on your overall health.
Your doctor will not recommend that you have a coronary angiogram unless the benefits outweigh this small risk.
My mum has had a couple of these examinations. I can understand your concerns, however, it is a vital examination in order to rule out any possible problems.

angiogram is when a small catheter is introduced into the artery ( in the groin or the arm pit ) passed up through the vessel to the arteries supplying the brain. Once in the vessel to be studied a small amount of iodine containing compound is injected while a video X-Ray movie is recorded. The images are reviewed to see what the arteries in your mothers brain look like, if there are any abnormalities (like an aneurism), and if there is any blockages.
The procedure is routine. The risks are minimal for just the angiogram. If they are going to place stents to open clogged areas, or try to fix an aneurism there is some additional risk.
If your mother is alergic to shell fish or iodine be sure to let the doctor know.

I remember mine as boring, like an MRI with contrast but longer. I was warned about possible side effects but I didn't have any.
All the best to your mum.
