i am being shipped to basic training in a couple of months and im really out of shape..im not obese but i do have alot of body fat at the time..i should also add that i am a smoker.. now i know that running a mile should have taken its toll on me but when i was done i started coughing and just got this overwhelming sense of paranoia because of my heart rate and what not...does this seem normal or does it sound like im just being paranoid?

Smoking is the problem, but if you want to get in shape, don't run just yet, Walk 5 to ten miles a day, everyday, limit your smoking as much as possible. force yourself to wait as long as possible before lighting up again. In Basic, It's up to the DI as to when you get your first smoke break, Mine waited 3 weeks before we got our first smoke break. I was ready to quit completely by that time, Stupid me, I smoked anyway...

Your heartrate what, increased? That's supposed to happen when you exercise. I'll go ahead and assume it's the first time you exercised in a while. Don't worry, I was the same way. I've been in for four and a half years.

QUit smoking now. At the very least, stop at least a week before you ship. The nicotine runs through your system in 3 days, and after that it's all mental. At basic you shouldn't have time to even have to deal with the mental aspect, but it'll be much better to deal with the physical aspect of quitting before you're forced to do so.

You do not sound paranoid but you do sound out of shape & lazy. Set up a training routine to get ready. The Army website has a suggested program. Oh yeah, give up the cigarette - save your lungs (that is why you are coughing & having trouble breathing after running, save you money, & stop you from going crazy during traiing.
Good luck & start training today !

Stop smoking now, and start out by walking the mile. In a few days, when the not smoking starts getting to you, bump it up to running. Don't overdo it or you'll just be defeating the purpose.. but if you can't run more than a mile by the time you start basic, you'll really have a struggle on your hands.

There's plenty of time... just get started on it now.

I was in good shape for a smoker at Navy bootcamp. I saw firsthand what the punishment was if you got caught smoking. It was really sickening. The clock is ticking and you need to start doing physical stuff before you get there. You'll be glad you prepped for it. It's no walk in the park. Good luck.

You won't be permitted to have tobacco products in basic - so save yourself the trouble and quit now, instead of having nic fits when you get there.

As for feeling like crap after a mile, well...if you don't run, that'll happen. I'd suggest fast-paced walking for a few weeks to start if you don't run at all, it'll do more for you than over-exerting yourself.

It's normal.

A couple of things to remember. There is no smoking in BCT. You will be a non-smoker in a couple of months. You might want to make it easier and start trying to give it up now.

The running in BCT will start out slow. You will still cough up a lung (I did), but you will make it.

Smoking will really hurt you. You'll have to be in height/weight requirements before you go. I know this isn't what you were asking but running the first time after not running will make anyone feel anxious and jittery I think...

You're fine, you're just out of shape.

But you're in luck. If you don't run your first mile in under 9min your first day of basic training, you will be shipped off to FAT CAMP!

(If you're infantry, it's 7:30)
