You don't mention which anti depressants you've tried - but if they haven't worked you really need to speak to a specialist.
There are many different medications for depression and anxiety, and different specialists like to work with different drugs. Ask your doctor about trying an MAOI, which are meant to be very effective for people who haven't responded to other medications. You must avoid certain foods while on an MAOI, though, so make sure you get decent instructions.
Good luck with it.

It is rough when you can't find an antidepressant that will work. Mine isn't working well either. There is a class of antidepressants that are MAOI; there are more side effects from them but they may work better. Suggest this to your doctor. Sometimes counseling helps with depression too.
I know how you feel. I have not gotten over my depression either and I am doing everything recommended.
Good luck to you.

You didn't mention how long you have been on anti-depressants. If you have been on particularly an SSRI ie, Paxil, Zoloft, etc, (does not include Prozac), and have been taking them for 4-5 years, there is such a thing called poop-out syndrome, where the medication just doesn't cut it anymore, then you find yourself, either 1) at maximum dosage with no effect 2) combination of what you were previously on in conjuction with another one-this latter is definitely not the route to take, but they might be weaning you off of one, and trying a newer one. Sorry can't give more information without knowing, what and how long you have been on them.

Typically the way things go are you go to family doctor for initial diagnosis and treatment but he is supposed to fire you off to a psychiatrist for confirmation of diagnosis and treatment then you are supposed to go to counseling. Also you should have one week follow up until depression is lifted. This is universal good care. If you are not having that then you must insist on it. These meds are nothing to fool with and need to be fine tuned or changed as needed.
some people will find tricyclics will work best for moderate to severe depression if they find ssri's are too stimulating. Others will find they need help with mood stabilizers for sleep aids. All kinds of options to get you feeling better.

Yeah my boyfriend of 4 years just found out that he is biopolar and the whole time before that they thought he was just had depression and has been trying each and every biopolard medication and nothing seems to be working for him either they have the worst side affects and he has to keep going to the hospital to up his dosage. So I know what your going through, cause I see what he goes through. I would talk to your doctor though and see if he can put you on something else or up your dosage or something. I hope you feel better

If you arn't, you should see a psychiatrist. They can properly diagnose you and get you the right medications. I went to a family doctor for years with depression and could never find anything that would work. Finally this year I started seeing a psychiatrist and I have medication that is actually helping now.

Studies have shown that if you do nothing, 30% of people will get rid of their depression naturally.
Exercise has also been shown to be beneficial for people with depression... studies have shown up to 80% effectiveness.
High protein / Low carbohydrate diets have also been shown to be beneficial for people suffering from depression.
My advice is to exercise regularly, get your diet in order, and focus on the goals in your life.
Unfortunately most people will not do this.... they prefer to believe that a pill has all the healing power that they seek.
Also, go to a good hypnotherapist so that you can clear up/neutralise any emotional baggage that may be fuelling the depression.
Warm Regards,
David

Talk to your doctor immediately!! Anti-depressants are nothing to fool around with. Sometimes the body builds up a high tolerance for them and they stop working unless you take more and more. Do not stop taking them abruptly though as this can have bad effects also. let your Dr. make the decision for you. Good luck. :-}
