I would have said "oh how nice", then would have hopped into my car and left.
I tip people who do not act as though they expect a tip. IF that guy would not have said that, he would have gotten a good few bucks tip depending on how much groceries I had.

Being an ex waitress/ bartender. I always thought that this type of thing was rude. It's almost like begging to me. I've never asked for a tip. If I got one, great! If I didn't, then I will remember that customer the next time they're in. I would not have tipped the person just for asking. Or if I did, it would have been a tiny bit of change. People in the military don't make that much money unless they are an officer. Money can be tight for a military family. Next time you go there, just say , "No, I can manage by myself." and walk out.

he hands you the groceries to out in the car then has the nerve to say "i work for tips"? I would have probably fell out laughing .... then had a talk with the store manager and explain that I was being hustled for tips ini the parking lot by some old geezer employee.
We went out to eat one night ... a weeknight, the diner was practically empty, but the waitress was busy talking to her heavily pierced boyfriend @ the counter. Waited over 15 minutes for a menu, another 10 minutes for something to drink, had to call her over to get our order, the order sat in the window so long the cook brought it us, you get the picture .... after we paid for the food and were leaving, she came rushing to the front to the diner and practically yelled "hey, you didn't leave me a tip! Don't I get a tip?" Some people have all the nerve ...

The old geezer may have protected the country as well when he was young. If you don't want to pay for a service (tip in this case) then you should not use it.
I am not a fan of tipping, but in this case, you are 100% wrong in attitude. Carry your own **** groceries or help out a guy who's trying to make a little money by honest work.

Tell him you will report his company store to the Better Business Bureau because they allow him to represent the store as an unpaid employee who is then allowed to harass people for tips. Tell him you will not facillitate such behavior and don't tip.
Once a bagger helped me to my car with my purchase and honestly complained to me that he only earned $1.00 per hour. I told him to report it to the state because it is illegal to be employed at less than minimum wage.
I did file a report of such actions to the Better Business Bureau. They went out to the business and warned them to cease the offending action or there would be a penalty.
Hope this helps.

I think I'd stop shopping at that store. He's working for something besides "tips" or he's showing off the fact that he only works to have something to keep him out of the house.
I shop at a store where they carry your groceries out and there are signs all over the place that say "our carry-out service is done as a convenience to our customers and no tip will be expected or accepted."

Report him to the supermarket manager. Loading your grocery bags into your car doesn't automatically entitle him to tips. And how rude, to ask for a tip. Ask if this is the store's policy? Let the manager know how rude this guy acted to you.
A good response? "good for you." Leave it at that. Next time you see him, tell him you got it, you don't need his help b/c you need the cash.

I would simply say the same think I say to most panhandlers.
"I can't help you today."
Let him grumble all he wants. Then next time at that store (if I actually go back) I talk to the manager about how he pays the carry-out people.
But I avoid as much as I can all the situations where people 'expect' a tip.

When they got that commissary job, they knew they would be working for tip only and it was extremely rude of him to say that seeing as there is a sign probably six feet long stating that fact. Thank him for serving his time (he's probably retired military) and get in your car and go.

I would tell the store manager about him. If he works there he's not allow to accept tips from customers getting into there car.
I know because my husband worked for Publix's supermarket and he wasn't allow to take tips from customers.
