The .avi extension is not specific to any single encoding scheme and could represent at least several different video formats including Divx, Xvid, H.264, etc.

The K-Lite Codec pack includes all of the necessary CODECs to view just about anything. You can download it for free here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

Good luck!

open windows media player, click the arrow under one of the menu bars (library will work). In more options you will find a bar labeled file types. In file types you will NOT find avi? Possibly they ditched it cause I thought I could with WMP10. If you uninstall 11 it will automatically revert to 10. And for the sake of your PC do not download codecs for media player. It's a windows product they will give you safe un-trojaned codecs.

windows media player 11 is still having problems running on vista. you should roll back your player to media player 10 untill windows announces that the bugs have been worked out. thats what i had to do... yea, it sucks, but hey... 10 works jsut as good as 11...

You’re probably missing the video codec for it. To find out which video codec you need, run one of the tools listed on this page and find out what the fourcc is.
