My hair is dark brown. I want to lighten it to either light brown, blonde, or red (or something with highlights, as long as it's lighter). My specifications are that I want it to be an obvious change, I want it to be lighter, and I don't want it to totally fry up. Which color would be the safest/easiest option to dye it.

Question....

First, does your hair contain a hair color right now? If so, the ONLY ONLY thing you can lighten your hair with is a hair lightener, also known as BLEACH! Yes, that's right. That is the ONLY thing that will lighten your hair if it contains a hair color.

If you hair is VIRGIN, and does NOT contain any hair color on it at all, then you can lighten it with a hair color. If you were in MY shop, I would use a product that Redken puts out called COLOR FUSION. It is a very good product that will do a very minimal amount of damage. Bear in mind that ANYTHING you put on your hair to lighten it will do some damage. That is how the product makes your hair lighter. By doing some damage. But the COLOR FUSION will make you hair shiny and look BEAUTIFUL!

Last point: DO NOT TRY TO DO THIS YOURSELF!!! You will make you hair EVERY color except the color you want. PLEASE PLEASE go to a professional and have him/her do it, okay? AND ask how long they have DOING COLOR! Some professionals have been doing "hair" for a long time, but are NOT color literate.

Going one or two shades lighter than your normal hair color would be the safest way to do it, and that is going from dark brown to medium brown or light brown.

If going from dark brown to blonde, you need to bleach your hair and bleaching can cause your hair to fry, especially if you're trying to reach the lightest shade of blonde possible.

I'm not sure about red though, but red fades easily to brown in the sun.

my friends wife did that and she went with like a sort of straw berry blonde(not sure of correct color but its a blonde/red color you really see the red when the sun hits it but froma distance it just looks like a blonde with highlites), then with plain blonde high lites like on top of it (not just top of head but like the base color under it and high lites on the out side), came out real nice
