I am an Espiritismo Padrino so I deal a lot with the spirits of the dead...and it's not dangerous if you know what you are doing...generally spirits will not answer these sorts of questions because they view them to be trivial and earthly. Those that do answer this type of question are usual low spirits that are lying to you and just want to trick you.
If you ever want to contact a spirit, I recommend that you find an Espiritismo practioner to guide you in this.

the future is not a set thing. and random events are not predictable.
all that divination will tell us is the probable outcome of a current path. assumeing that nothing happens to change that path.
picture time as a drop of rainwater on a clean window. it will run in a straight line to the bottom. UNLESS another drop falls into it's way. this drop may stick and wait to join with the previous drop and then take a different course(depending on where the surface tension of the water is the least) or it may run ahead of the previous drop making a path that will speed the drop along once they merge.
but a bit of dirt on the window may move them both several inches to one side.
the types of things that we can get help with are some insight into current problems, and possibly some insight into the possible futures depending on what actions we may take in the present.

No. Stay away from stuff like that. There are real accounts of black magic hurting people.
I do sometimes think of a departed loved one...for no particular reason, and talk with them for a few minutes. I don't ask any favors..just tell them my problems and sometimes an answer supplies itself.
If you want the winning lottery numbers, you are asking for the wrong reasons.

To answer your question, in vodoo we honor our dead as if they were still alive. It is very important to do this because they are the link to our hertiage and most important because they give us the ability to do well and keep us focused. We ask them for help just as you do any older person in your home just not for lottery numbers.
