A tip (also known as a gratuity) is designed as a reward for service industry employees. It is meant as a gesture of gratitude for the person who ensured an excellent dining experience. There are no hard set rules defining exactly how you should tip. But, if you are picking up a take out order, the gratuity does not necessarily apply because there was no server to take the order, deliver your food, clear your dishes, or attend to requests. If you like the host who took your order, you might want to give them a buck, but any more is excessive.

i say yes - at least a couple bucks. the restaurant where i work has a carry out counter. as a server, i work side by side the "ToGo" people while expediting my orders in the kitchen, so i see what they do.

firstly, they have to deal with the public, which can be wearing. maintaining a smiling face despite the moods of your clientele is a job in itself.

secondly, they package up the orders very nicely. i know not all restaurants do this, but mine does. we don't use styrofoam, but rather disposable catering containers. each side dish is seperately contained.

thirdly, they have to deal with the kitchen just like the servers do. and if you've ever worked in a restaurant you know what this means. they have no control over the speed of which your meal is being prepared, yet they are "on the clock" as far as the customer is concerned. they must demand quality standards which might mean having a dish re-prepared which can cause friction and delays in the kitchen.

at my job they are also responsible for answering all phone calls. if it is not a carry out order, they have to either forward it to the appropriate person or take a message. in addition to that, they have cleaning duties. but, that is why they are paid a higher wage than servers.

at least the ToGo people at MY work deserve at least a couple bucks because they put a lot of care in giving our customers good service.

No. You are picking up the food not having it served to you.

When you buy a box of cereal for breakfast at the supermarket you don't tip the cashier. This is the same situation.

Please, Absolutely NOT. Let's not start something else that we have to tip people for. Come on get serious. They are just doing their job. They are not going above and beyond their job. And besides they are not a restaurant. Not even at restaurants do you tip at "To Go" take out food's.

NO, tips are for service received. Tossing your food randomly into a bag & hurling it at you through a small window doesn`t count.

NO. However, I feel intimated sometimes lately at certain restaurants. If you feel that you've gotten "exceptional" service from the person then give them a couple of bucks. I have, but you don't give gratuity generally for carryout.

I don't think so. I do not tip because I am not using their services, as in filling my drink glass, bringing me condiments/napkins, checking to make sure everything is alright. You are paying for what you get, your food!
