I am writing an essay and I need to know why it rises and the crashes. What happens in your body that does that? What gives your body that shot of energy?

when simple sugars are ingested they need no digestion so they are absorbed through both the lining of the mouth and in the stomach very rapidly. this causes blood sugar (serum glucose) to increase rapidly. when serum glucose increases rapidly insulin is secreted to restore serum glucose levels to normal. when serum glucose rises very high very rapidly insulin spikes which causes a great amount of insulin to be secreted. this causes serum glucose levels to clear very rapidly and usually results in a hypoglycemic state (low blood sugar). this usually causes fatigue at first and then hunger a short time later.

Lantus is the long acting insulin. There is no peak with it so you get about the same effect from it all day. When you go to that class you will find they advise you eat three meals a day and up to four snacks spread throughout the day. You mention nothing about what you eat. You clearly are not eating enough to cover this lantus. Orange Juice is one of the best things that will bring your sugar back up in a hurry. Also you may carry with you some brown sugar. This acts fairly fast also. When your doctor prescribed the 22 units they assumed that you would at the very least eat as you should. This will all be discussed in that class but until then please start eating more. With lantus and proper eating you should never have the problems you do. In fact you may begin to go high because you are not using the short acting insulin. When you have diabetes your whole life changes. Once you get the hang of it it is not that bad. But you need to learn the proper balance. As you may already know the short acting insulin is used to cover any give meal. If you are use to not eating because you want to keep your weight down you need to begin looking at this differently. If you don't your very life could be at stake. Example: My wife has diabetes. I woke up one night at 3:00 AM She sounded normal but when I felt her she was sweating profusely. Normally I just go get orange juice and wake her up and she comes back. This time there was no waking her up. No matter what I did she had no response. It took the EMS and the emergency room to get her back. You don't want this to ever happen. Especially if you live alone.

simple sugars are digested quickly by the body and dumped into the bloodstream. your blood sugar level rises quickly. your body stores as much as it can in the muscles and liver as glycogen. once the glycogen stores are full, your body dumps insulin into the blood stream to drive the excess sugars into storage. thus rapidly reducing the blood sugar level. that's your rise and crash in a nutshell..
