Who knows? The stuff written about Jesus was written decades after he died, if he existed at all. There's nothing really known about him.
Christianity is based on fairytales written a long time after the face, if there were any facts to begin with.

The sermon comprises the following components:
Introductory narrative (Matthew 5:1-2) - a large crowd assembles due to Jesus healing the sick, so he climbs a mountain and speaks.
The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12), which describe the character of the people of the kingdom.
The metaphors of Salt and Light (Matthew 5:13-16), which forms a conclusion to the picture of God's people drawn in the beatitudes, as well as an introduction to the next section.
The Expounding of the Law (Matthew 5:17-48), a fulfillment and reinterpretation of Mosaic Law and in particular the Ten Commandments, contrasting with what "you have heard" from others, also known as the Antitheses.
The Discourse on ostentation (Matthew 6), condemning the "good works" of fasting, alms, and prayer, when they are only done for show, and not from the heart. The discourse goes on to condemn the superficiality of materialism and call the disciples not to worry about material needs, but to "seek" God's kingdom first.
Within the Discourse is the Lord's Prayer, which Matthew presents as an example of correct prayer, but Luke places in a different context.
The Discourse on judgementalism (Matthew 7:1-6), condemning those who judge others before first judging themselves.
The Discourse on holiness (Matthew 7:7-29), which forms the summary conclusion of the sermon, warning against False prophets, and giving emphasis to the difficulty of doing what is right.

The Beatitudes describe the ideal disciple, and his rewards, both present and future. The person whom Jesus describes in this passage has a different quality of character and lifestyle than those still "outside the kingdom." As a literary form, the beatitude is also found often in the Old Testament, especially in the Psalms (1:1; 34:8; 65:4; 128:1), and often in the New Testament also (John 20:29; 14:22; James 1:12; Revelation 14:13).

The sermon on the mount is what separates Jews from Christians. Christians claim that Jesus clarified God's laws. Jews believe it to be a reversal of God's law. And I don't think there was a New Law, I think there was some sort of New Covenant. This contradicts not only Jewish beliefs but, arguably, the Old Testament.

The sermon on the mount is considered the spirit of the law as opposed to the letter of the law.

Read "The Jesus I Never Knew".
He said a lot of stuff. I think you should make your question more specific. The sermon is relatively long and complex. You should post the bits that confuse you.

Statements made around a half century before it was recorded on scrolls cannot be regarded as completely accurate. What one had for lunch yesterday is already difficult to recall. Just imagine the recollection of old men of accounts, and words spoken 50 to 60 years in the past. The credibility of the Bible is very suspect.

Read it yourself. Its recorded in the Gospel of Saint Matthew chapters 5, 6 and 7.
The oldest copies of this gospel date back to within 5 years of Jesus died. So you can count on its reliability.

Because he wanted to tell us something.
Even now, after reading it so many times, sitting in silence, contemplating His Words, I get goose bumps, like I feel He is right there next to me.
He really is.
