The sound you hear is known as Articular release, which is a physiologic event that may or may not be audible. It is seen in patients with healthy joints as well as those with somatic dysfunction.

Articular release is a repeatable phenomenon that can occur with or without an accompanying noise. It causes a freeing of motion and a release of joint tension.

However, the physiologic and anatomic explanation for what
happens during articular release is not fully understood. What is known is that articular release occurs when joint motion extends past the physiologic barrier. This extension may be accomplished by an outside force—as induced by a physician—or through muscle movement not directly emanating from joint release. The sound, or the noise,is what people notice in articular release; the subjective relief it provides is secondary.

In other words it is not a serious problem. I've enclosed a link to a website where you can find out more about this condition.

You should check this Sciatica Natural Treatment
http://cure-sciatica.info

Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica. Try a reputable chiropractor ASAP!

you haven't been moving/exercising/"stretching" your neck too much. That's why you're re-aligning it to it's original position by "cracking your neck". Others might say "cracking your bones" isn't good for you. I'm no doctor, so I might be wrong.
