if you mean the iron curtain that separated the east from the west, the collapse can be said to have started with the ascendance of Mikail Gorbachev to the head of the soviet union in 1985. In late 1986 and early 1987 the first signs of nationalism arose and by 1989 the Berlin wall was down - which could be termed the true collapse.

BTW: The term Iron Curtain was popularised (albeit not coined) by Winston Churchill in 1946. it is figurative term for the barrier between east and west - that became a real physical barrier along the borders of countries like poland but was originally an idealogical wall. The Berlin wall was not the iron curtain as such - just the most visible part.

EDIT: NATO = North Atlantic Treaty Organisation - the coalition of western countries that would stand in mutual defense against an attack. Their counterpart in the east was the Warsaw Pact.

NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The "iron curtain" or "Berlin wall" was opened by the GDR police on 9 November 1989. Over the next couple of days, a full scale operation began to dismantle a barrier that had divided the German people and their country for 28 years.

There was no literal "Iron Wall". The Berlin Wall (a barrier of concrete, barbed wire and mines) that separated West Berlin from the rest of communist East Germany was torn down in 1989.
