Now, im not saying cutting is right. Im not saying i dont do it either. Yes im getting help but what ive seen is the looks on people faces when they see my scars. And how "gross" it is that people do such a thing. I must say its an addiction extreamly hard to break. Why cant people understand that? Does anyone really find the people who do that disgusting or inhuman? I dont understand.

People don't understand it. Cutters often have underlying emotional disorders such as depression or low self-esteem, and use cutting as a way to "self-medicate".

Most people, as a whole, don't understand why a person would try to harm themselves.

If you are a cutter, I would please ask you to go talk to somebody about it. Cutting is a self-defense mechanism, that people use to deal with emotional issues they can't deal with. Getting help is the best thing for you, so you can stop harming yourself.

Basically it pushes peoples buttons.
Its also to do with modern society. in years gone by in some cultures cutting and scarring was used as a ritual to go into manhood. your scars were a symbol of pride. different cultures used it for different things, and it was fully accepted. however, it was not done because of the severe emotional pain they were experiencing. i think this is the key.
Its a bit biased. people who get tattoos, piercings, drink excessive amounts of alcohol, take drugs are harming themselves too, its just more widespread and for some reason more accepted. perhaps becuase the line with these between self harm and death is a whole lot wider
Humans are genetically programmed- both psychologically and physically- to do everything possible to avoid pain and damage. an example of this is the instant recoiling that happens when you touch a hot object- it happens before the message 'hot- could cause damage' has reached the brain. people cannot comprehend wanting to do something like that to yourslef at all. have you ever had to psych yourself into cutting? especially when you first started doing it?
All this is not helped by the fact that society is so totally misinformed as to the reasons... Most people, even some mental health workers, think that you do it for attention, to be manipulative, to challenge people and push their buttons, to hurt them. for most self harmers, this could not be further from the truth. they feel confronted, affronted.
People fear what they dont understand

people are ignorant. they don't want to accept anything that they can not relate to and understand for themselves. All people have addictions and ways of dealing with their problems. This is just your way. It does not mean you are gross or disgusting. Everyone has their own issues. SOme can just hide it better than others. Cutting is a way for stress to be released. don't let what other people thing bother you.

People who don't do this can't fully understand.
It is an extreem way to deal with some very difficult emotional pain.
There are some medications that can help.
It will take all that is in you to stop this and you HAVE to stop and find a different way to deal with stress.

You are not discusting or inhuman......you just have some very deep emotional issues that you are dealing with.

I don't know why people feel this way. They just simply don't realize it is an addiction, or sometimes a sickness (not saying you are sick, but it can sometimes be a sign of something more). I have not really been around people that feel that way about it, and no I don't find people that do it disgusting or anything.

Many people are ignorant when it comes to addiction. I have noticed, if people are not addicts, they don't believe addiction really exists. Some believe addicts have the ability to control themselves. It bothers me too. I have a hard time talking to people about my addiction to control of food with restricting and bulimia. Most often the people I talk to don't believe that you can actually have an addiction to food. Some people don't even believe drugs and alcohol are addictive. What seems to help me, is just keeping it to myself, or talking to someone who I KNOW will understand what I am telling them, or just better informing someone who is worth talking to about my problem.

Good luck in your recovery!!!

I used to cut, and I still think about it daily. I guess I'm lucky, I've never had anyone react like that. I think it's just one of those things everyone notices and no one mentions. Maybe I'm just not as observant, who knows. I'm sorry you have to deal with that. People suck.

It is a very sad, and disgusting disease. There's something horrifying about feeling so bad that you resort to self-mutilation. It's like you have no other way to deal with your emotions so you just abuse yourself.

Awful!
