Yes. A breeder can help you whereas pet stores will want nothing to do with you and your problems once the sale is made. That, and quality breeders would never sell to a pet store because they don't know where the dog will end up. Most breeders will only sell dogs on a spay/neuter contract, unless purchased specifically for breeding or showing. The breeder should invite you to their home to view the puppies once you let them know you are interested, or put you on a waiting list. Both parents should be on site, or at least the mother. The breeder should talk openly about genetic problems and diseases, and show you certificates for the parents and the puppies showing that they do not have these problems. Screening can be done for hip and elbow displaysia, as well as juvenile cataracts and other eye problems.
All the puppies should approach you happily, tails wagging and eyes bright. The mothers temperament is extremely important, as she can give her pups genetic behaviors as well as learned behaviors. The puppies should be in the house and raised around normal hustle and bustle, and not in a kennel outside!
The breeder should be friendly, if you do not feel that you could call this person and ask a question about health, training, or the dog, look elsewhere!

It is always better to buy from a reputable breeder, no matter what breed of pet you are getting, rather than from a pet store. You do not know where the pet store got the animal, and many buy from puppie mills, where animals are not cared for properly, and you could get a sick animal, or one that does not have a good disposition.
Better even than getting one from a breeder, however, is getting one from an animal shelter or from a rescue organization.

Ok, Courtney you must not know many petstores owners, because have you ever tried to care for a 1lb 14 week old yorkie pup, pet stores do. Yorkies are hard to breed because so small the sometimes get low blood sugar and if some one didn`t know about yorkies it would die. my parents own a kennel i work ther also. we sell to pet stores, our best friends own pet stores.
Hillarygoillary, you say no self respecting kennel would sell to a petstore, then you say my parents and i arent self respecting. well you have no idea, the pet stores we sell to are amazing. One in perticulary we sold a yorkie pup and she had 4 different people want it she chose the family who would be the best but could pay the least. to say the least you are wronge.
DEMON you said
most pet stores do not take very good care of their dogs. They tend to come from puppy mills whose main purpose is to breed as many pups as possible to make as much money as they can. This results in a lot of unhealthy, poorly socialized pups. The pet store itself is no better when it comes to caring for the puppies. My parents own a kennel and we sell to stores, and to do what we do if you were educated on the matter would know you must pass USDA, AKC inspections. We are not a puppy mill !! our puppies are well socialized, got to great stores. Before you Judge do your reasearch.

Of the two, definitely a breeder. Sad to say, most pet stores do not take very good care of their dogs. They tend to come from puppy mills whose main purpose is to breed as many pups as possible to make as much money as they can. This results in a lot of unhealthy, poorly socialized pups. The pet store itself is no better when it comes to caring for the puppies. I've seen stores where pups are kept it plastic children's playhouse on wood shavings with water bottles to drink from. Every person I know who bought a cat or dog froma pet store has had some kind of issue. One woman bought a dog because she felt sorry for him and the poor animal just had all kinds of behavior problems. A friend of mine had a cat who was so skinny all her life I was sure she had been a stray and shocked to learn that she came from a pet store. When I was little, a friend of mine got a puppy from a pet store and it was dead in less than a month. Sadly, getting a dog or cat from most pet stores is asking for heartache.
Don't rule out shelters either. You can often find purebred dogs at shelters or breed rescues.

It is far better to buy a puppy from a responsible breeder then it is a pet store. Pet store puppies come from mills or otherwise irresponsible breeders..many aren't even really purebred even though they are sold as such. They are also usually very high priced..higher often tehn a well bred dog from a responsible breeder.

Neither!! Rescue rescue rescue!!!
do a search for Yorkie rescues in your area... also vets sometimes have lists of good breed specific rescues in your area.... there are so many dogs/puppies out there that need good homes... please dont support pet stores at least... breeders are great but again try some rescues first....are you set on a yorkie or do you just want a small dog Maybe expand your search by looking at some small mixed breed pups... save a life... you wont regret it.....good luck!!! smile

Usually a breeder. With pet stores, you can't look at the parents to try to judge the kind of temperament you can expect or how big you can expect the puppy to get.

Hello & YEP...ask to see the parents @ least the mom if they studded her but a good breeder should have pic's etc of the male...ask to see their living conditions..if they won't show ya that ...walk away...also try a local vet, clinic or Yorkie Resuce Center...fair warning tho...they have been so overbred, even by professionals..they can have alot of heatlh issues, no matter how much you pay for them !! Take Care :)

Never buy pets from a pet store. They have most likely come from a puppy mill and could well be sick.
