How are things different, better or worse, for black folks? I'll be teaching English at a university, do you think I might encounter any problems there because of racism?

Hi! I am a Chinese myself and welcome to China.

There are nothing to worry about at all my friend. You will be welcome by us as honored guests. Some times people may stare at you but it is not because of racism but because of curiosity. But in major cities we are use to people from all over the world and you will just be as a ordinary person.

Have you ever watched a real old (classic) movie "To Sir with Love"??? If not, try to find it!!!!! Bring it with you and show to your students .. :P The one you get in US wouldn't have Chinese Subtitles and it is good for training their listening skills. (below is the info about the movie)

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0062376/

Have you heard of "Silk Road"? Chinese have met Persians, Indians in the Tang Dynasty or even earlier to trade silk with spices that's over a thousand years ago. In the 50s & 60s when nearly all Western Countries was boycotting China, only the third world countries in Africa had trading business with China. Last year, I saw an African (well he's black, may be he's an American) in a small town which is 2 hours driving away from Shengzhen train station. He was alone walking on the street, only 2 of us (the Hong Kongers) paid attention that he walked by, the local people just didn't show any interest at all.

Therefore, I guess you better spend your time on preparing your teaching kits / materials / .... instead of worrying about racism in China!

Dalian is a very beautiful city, I really like it a lot, you are lucky to get an offer there! You would enjoy your stay in such a clean and open city (it is the main Seaport for the Northern China).

I wish you all the best!

Anyone who would tell a Black man "
Well, the general rule of thumb is that the bigger the city, the less the racism. :D

Since Dalian is a medium-sized city, and add the fact that you're teaching at an university (which is bound to have lots of liberal young people), you should have no problem." is a liar. He hates Black people, and shouldn't be telling any Black people that they will be safe, when he is in a group just like cho and he helped cho get the guns and hide them until it was time to attack. Don't listen to this pig, he hates Black people! He is in the network with waiching liu that they kidnap white tourists and slit their throats and leave them bleeding while others watch.

I was originally from Dalian, and even though it's not as big as Shanghai, it still attracts a lot of tourists. And there are people from all over the world, so don't worry about it. There will always be idiots in the world, especially those who has never seen a black guy before. But generally you'll be fine.

I don't think you need to worry about that in China and especially Dalian. Dalian is a big outsourcing base for Japan, Korea and other countries. Most of the working professional population are bilingual and it has quite a few foreign nationals working there. It is a prospering and progressive city. I think you will enjoy your teaching sting there. Good luck!

I have lived in China for over 5 years. I have two daughters they are half Chinese. I am not Chinese yet we were treated wonderfully. Dont listen to some looney about being followed it doesn't happen. Racism is not too big in Northern China. I lived in Shandong which is close to Dalian, Learn some Chinese language and have fun. Most people love Michael Jordan and Mike Tyson...You'll see. Have a great time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can email me privately and I can tell you much about this situation. First, the Chinese are our enemy. They have plans to over throw us in a nuclear attack. But their first plan is to ruin us by destroying our economy.

Secondly, you are their enemy and they will have SPIES watching you at ALL times. My friend traveled to China last year. He spent time in China and they had spies watching him at all times. He was chased thru parks and everything else when he noticed they were spying on him. You will be spied on at all times.

Further, you do NOT want to do them ANY favors. You will be doing a dis service to your own country by going over to the enemy to do this. Want to teach english? teach it HERE or in a country that is our ALLIES not the ENEMY.

All Chinese hates the United States. All the friendly talk up are fake, all thoses Chinese want to kill us Americans, they hate us, they realy do and I am 100% sure of it.

Even if you go there, the army and secret police will first take all of your belongings then torture you slowly and after a few weeks they will shoot you are kill you! The people will then eat you or grind you up as an aphrodisiac!

China is a mess up nation, here in the US we look at China and it is a JOKE! Stay away my friend- trust me.

LONG LIVE THE GREAT USA!!! USA!!! USA!!!

I shake my head....an potential English teacher at a Chinese university asking this badly phrased undiplomatic question over the Internet? It will be useful to read this question to your students and ask them to rephrase it for you.

By the way, which university engage you?
