Artists use either petroleum jelly, A&D ointment, or lubricating jelly. The latter is the only safe product to use with latex gloves because the other two break them down, exposing the artist to possible bloodborne pathogens.
This is why my studio is latex free, besides the fact that so many people are allergic these days.

Sorry, Star, but you're wrong. I go to the best, highest quality shop in Cincinnati, and the artists use Vaseline during the process of the tattoo. I'm not mistaken, because I was there today, getting one on my arm.

Vasiline/patrolium jelly is a really dumb thing to use. for one its too greesy and makes the coats the skin to thick even you think its not and two it has some stuff in it thats not good. USE A&D OINTMENT! You can buy a tube of it at walmart(near the diaper/pharmacy section). Its for that kind of use and doesnt have antibiotics in it(which is actually not a good thing for tatts) a tube ranges from $1.50 to $5 depending on the brand you buy, so cheap!

I've seen artists use a variety of products from some sort of oily spray to a cream to Vaseline. The last tattoo I got, the artist used Vaseline.
