There's a book called the "Century of the Surgeon" by Jurgen Thorwald which describes the evolution of surgery and anaesthesia in the 19th century. There is a description of a surgeon who, before the development of anaesthesia, operated on himself for a bladder stone (which in those days before antibiotics were introduced were usually fatal due to development of infections). He recovered and had the stone mounted on a ring which he wore for the rest of his life.
The physician who developed the technique of cardiac catheterisation (Dr Werner Forssmann from Germany), also first demonstrated the technique upon himself, canulating his own brachial artery.

If it is possible (which it probably would be for at least one type of surgery in today's high-tech world of medicine), then it probably wouldn't be legal to perform surgery on oneself because it would be a violation of medical ethics.

Besides the fact you could hemorrage , go into shock, get a massive infection or die...you wouldn't have an general anesthetic(what puts you to sleep), and would be in a severe amount of pain. And how would you be able to work on yourself??? Stupid question.

I watched my dad sew up his own forehead when I was a kid. He's a surgeon, accidents happen and he had the stuff to fix it himself so he did. I thought everyone's dad was capable of that, so it never bothered me. His friends, other m.d.'s did the same thing. Watched one sew up his own hand while we were deep sea fishing. Gross, but it happens. And a skin cancer came off by his own doing, too but he did that at his office. disgusting.

Well I'm sure it's possible, if you can stomach the pain and sights. But why would one want to do that?
