Everytime I make chocolate chip cookies from scratch, they come out tasting like sugar cookies. If I buy the mix to make the dough, it is fine. What am I doing wrong?

It is probably your recipe - there are a lot of things that can make your cookies taste different. I would recommend using the Crisco recipe - it is my favorite. Also, make sure your brown sugar is nice and fresh and don't use store brand chips, they just taste like oil to me. Let your cookie sheet cool completely in between batches (for quicker baking, use two) so they don't melt before they bake. Hope that helps!

Ultimate Chocolate Chip cookies from Crisco Website

Preparation time: 30 to 35 minutes
Baking time: 8 to 13 minutes/baking sheet
About 3 dozen cookies

1-1/4 cups firmly packed light brown sugar
3/4 cup Butter Flavor CRISCO all-vegetable shortening or 3/4 Butter Flavor Crisco stick
2 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 egg
1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup (6-ounce package) semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup pecan pieces (optional)*

Heat oven to 375ºF. Combine brown sugar, Butter Flavor Crisco Shortening, milk and vanilla in large bowl. Beat at medium speed of electric mixer until well blended. Beat egg into creamed mixture.
Combine flour, salt and baking soda. Mix into creamed mixture until just blended. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts, if used.
Drop rounded measuring tablespoonfuls of dough 3 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheet.
Bake one baking sheet at a time at 375ºF for 8 to 10 minutes for chewy cookies (they will look light and moist), or 11 to 13 minutes for crisp cookies. DO NOT OVERBAKE. Cool 2 minutes on baking sheet on a cooling rack; remove cookies to rack to cool completely.

I use the recipe on the back of the bag of Hershey's milk chocolate chips. I also use real butterm real vanilla and brown sugar. Everywhere I take these cookies, everyone wants my secret. The secret is Hershey's milk chocolate chips rather than semi sweet.

I have also used that recipe with white chocolate chips and as long as the brown sugar, vanilla and butter are there, it comes out great.

I'd have to see your recipe to know what you might be doing wrong, but my guess is you may be using too much sugar, hence the sugar cookie taste.

Try cutting the amount of sugar, and use bittersweet chips if you aren't already.

I use the recipe on on the toll house bag, but i use mini kisses. dark brown sugar, real vanilla, real butter and finely chopped walnuts. Every body tells me they are the best. Don't use cake flour, check your altitude for your area and adjust the temp & time accordingly. Good luck

I also think your recipe may be bad. I use the recipe on the back of the Toll House bag and use whole wheat flour. I think whole wheat flour cuts the sweetness some.
