Joe Louis Barrow (fought under the name of Joe Louis), the greatest heavyweight champion of all time and a great man as well. When told before his rematch with Max Schmeling in 1938 that Schmeling's handlers were advising him to dance around and stay away from Louis, Joe replied with words that instantly became famous and have remained so to this day: "He can run, but he can't hide." And so it came to pass that Louis knocked out Schmeling in the first round.
After World War II ended, Schmeling bought a Coca Cola bottling company franchise in his native Germany and became wealthy. Even though he had been a favorite of Hitler right up until he was knocked out by Louis in 1938, when he immediately and permanently fell out of favor with Hitler, Schmeling had never been a Nazi and had become a good friend of Louis', helping Louis financially when Louis was being hounded by the IRS for back taxes on boxing purses that Louis had earned while in the Army during the war and that he had donated to Army and Navy relief funds, on which his advisers had failed to pay the taxes.
Louis was down and out financially and was working as a "greeter" at a Las Vegas casino to keep body and soul together when Schmeling came to his aid. Schmeling provided financial assistance to Louis for the remainder of Louis' life.
When Louis died, Schmeling paid all of the funeral expenses and was a pallbearer.

Mohammad Ali because he had such a huge impact outside the ring as well. He taught people that "black is beautiful" and inspired blacks to not be ashamed of their color. He also stood up against the Vietnam War though it cost him his title and lots of money. Ali changed society and the world, boxing was only secondary. That's amazing given that he was easily one of the 3 greatest fighters of all time.
"I know I got it made while the masses of black people are catchin' hell, but as long as they ain't free, I ain't free."
"Hating people because of their color is wrong. And it doesn't matter which color does the hating. It's just plain wrong."
"I wish people would love everybody else the way they love me. It would be a better world."
-Ali

The blogbaba will always have a special place in his heart for Muhammed Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, Salvador Sanchez, Marvin Hagler and Julio Cesar Chavez, but my all time favorite fighter bar none is Roberto Duran.
Duran reminds the blogbaba of.....well....the blogbaba.

My fighter is Joe Louis. His stance was never out of place, he threw short but deadly combinations, and if he fought you twice in his prime you were going to get hurt if you stepped in the ring. Brilliant fighter. #1 Hardest puncher voted by Ring Magazine.

Muhammad Ali, Ray Leonard, Joe Frazier, Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran, Michael Spinks, Michael Carbajal, Larry Holmes, Jerry Quarry, Wilfred Benitez. Those were and are my favorites.
Speaking of Benitez take a second and give a prayer to him as he fights a battle due to the accumulation of punches he took when fighting. His brain is damaged because of it.
