Well apparently it's in the rules, but what's the reason why you can't? What would be the outcome if you did?

When the paint goes from a liquid to a solid state the molecules in the binder become cross linked to one another but since the oil and acrylic binder are not chemically compatible this will not occur; thus the paint layers do not adhere to one another properly and will someday peel away from one another.

My guess is that the oil would eventually eat through the acrylics. A canvas must be prepared prior to oil paints, or eventually the oil will eat through the canvas, so if someone paints on top of oil with another type of paint, the oil would probably damage it.

Sometimes the best lesson is to experiment with it. Try it and you will see the acrylic paint does not adhere to oil paint very well, and as time goes by, it will peel. Go ahead and get a new canvas. You wouldn't want your next master piece to fall off the old canvas.

You can...but....the oil needs to be really really dry...and that takes months, even years. As long as it isn't dry the oil in the paint will 'reject' the water in the acrylic paint.

The other way around works because acrilic paint dries so fast.

After the paint has dried there is no problem any more.

Your acrylic painting will not stick properly to the oily surface and eventually will fall off!
