My suggestion is that their are so many good marinara sauces already made in grocery stores, Just buy a brand you like, and add what you want to your taste. Experiment a little.

By the time you buy all the ingredients, you could have went out to eat making it from scratch.

I add roasted garlic peppers that I run through a food processor and add to the sauce. That's my taste.

One of the other people answering is right. The stuff you get in the restaurant is most likely from a can anyway.

Unless the restaurant's you visit are known to make their own sauces, many of them are already made and shipped either frozen or canned. Here is a recipe for marinara that I have used and love:

1 28 oz can good Tomato Sauce
1 15 oz can good Diced Tomatoes
2 T dried Italian Herbs
1 tsp fresh ground pepper
1 T kosher salt
1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
1/2 cup fresh oregano, chopped
1/2 cup good olive oil
1/2 - 1 tsp red pepper flakes
1 tsp sugar
1/2 cup red wine (opt)

Simmer the above for at least 1 hour or more to let the flavors meld. Enjoy!
