Well, Oprah does not eat after 7 or something like that. The key is not necessarily when you eat, but how much you eat. That being said, I know I get the late night munchies and I will eat things like carrots, celery, pickles, cucumbers, and even drink chicken broth. I believe there is some research that says if you drink a glass of water when hungry and wait fifteen minutes, sometimes you will not be hungry.
Good luck. Dieting is hard work...

30 minutes before bed would be the latest. at night meals should be mainly protein based as to not disrupt insulin levels.you also want to eat easily digestible proteins late at night as to not disrupt the ability to fall asleep. those would be eggs, fish, cottage cheese, sugar free yogurt and protein powders. so at night proteins, veggies and healthy fats are the preferred food items
the metabolic rate actually increases during the first phase of sleep above the resting metabolic rate then decreases lower and lower until the lowest point right before awakening. for the most part the greater the body fat percentage the greater the difference between the resting and sleeping metabolic rate.

The interesting thing is that it's not eating before bed, it's what you eat before bed that matters. (I used to think that there was a set time limit, but according to www.sparkpeople.com, that's actually a myth!)
If you need to eat before bed (which I do as well), go for something like fruit or a 100 calorie pack. You get just enough food to let you sleep, but none of it is bad for you.

2 or 3 hours, and if you do get the munchies before you go to bed, eat something healthy and that is low in calories, like vegetables, brocolli, carrots, etc. are all low in calories, and you would probably burn it all off while your sleeping as well.

eat a low carb snack before bed. High protein is good. But don't eat a main meal after 8 pm.

Oh sure... sure... most likely :) In reality I say my grace earlier than I do alot of matters every day... Like earlier than I go away my condo for paintings; within the workplace earlier than I begin paintings; earlier than I fall asleep, and so forth :) It's rather my appreciation to God for the entire well matters He has given me, the force He has given me to drag via the day and likewise the serenity He has given me after a difficult day's paintings :) *Peace*
