I used to have the same problem, until I learned how to do them correctly ... and actually, doing crunches is better for your back ...
Here is a step by step guide on how to effectively do sit ups for the best abs.
Lie on your back with your knees bent at 90 degrees.
Place your feet flat on the floor close to the buttocks, or raised up on a bench.
Avoid having the feet held down, this will work your hip flexor muscles instead.
Clasp your hands behind the neck just to support the weight of the head, do not use your kneck muscles, you will do damage.
Avoid jerking or twisting movements for beginners, keep straight.
Breathe comfortably throughout the exercise, breathe out going up, and breathe in going down.
Commence curls with the shoulders, then the upper back and then the lower back.
Bring the torso up no more than 45 degrees; hold momentarily then lower the torso, there is no need to go further.
Keep your chin off your chest, aim to keep your upper spine straight (a neutral position).
If you use an abdominal exerciser, it will help give you the correct position.

Make sure you lay on something soft ie a towel or excercise mat.
Also, don't pull on the back of your head with your hands when sitting, use only your stomach muscles (abs). And don't let your chin touch your chest. You should imagine (or actually do) put and apple between them. Both of these things can and will put strain on your neck and back.

Yup - dont do them!
Your back will be hurting because of a problem. Go to a doctor & try to get the problem sorted before doing any more as you are probably exacerbating the problem.

Have you tried using an exercise ball? I had the same problem, but a trainer friend told me to use the ball. It really works. I have lost 3 inches in my waist.

your core muscles are weak and this is causing the muscles of the hip flexors and erector spinae to perform the majority of the work when doing sit-ups. you need to work on your inner and outer upper thighs, abdominals and lower back to correct this muscle imbalance.

you have to make sure the surface is soft and firm enough, otherwise you will damage your back. you might also have to consider changeing the type of excersise you do as well as doing plenty of stretches and maybe you might need to start off slow to build up strength in your back otherwise you risk bad / permenant back injury.

try press ups lol no obviously your not positioning yourself properly try weighing your lower body down place your feet under the sofa and legs not bent as much sounds silly i no but i do them through pole dancing so it hurt me to start but you forget the pain in the end
