Why would someone want soft stools? If anything I'd prefer them somewhat hard most of the time after all they are less trouble that way.

Stool softeners soften the poop so it doesnt hurt as much coming out. They are not like laxatives that give you stomach cramps. Stool softeners work well for occasional constipation.

Stool softeners can help relieve constipation. They're not for the somewhat hard poo that we like but for the stools that become hard and painful.

Because sometimes people with constipation have really hard ones that hurt on the way out.
