Hiya hun,
I did this from 28 weeks with my first baby, and I graized, she was 5lb8. I didn't do it at all with my second and she was 7lb14, and nothing! If it'd make you feel better, then do it. But more important is to listen to your midwife when the babys head is crowning, she will try to make sure you don't tear.
Good luck with the birth

Yes, it's worth it. If the idea of that freaks you out, wait until the baby starts crowning!
YES! Do some gentle massage yourself, to prepare your perineum, so you won't tear! Also, be sure to talk to your doc and or midwife about your concerns (if you have them). I was really worried about tearing or having an episiotomy. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to do the perineal massage, because my baby came a month early.
But, it's supposed to help a lot. A good doc or midwife can help you push the right way and time it right so that you don't tear down there. But some docs will just do the episiotomy to get the baby out and stitch you up after. If you don't want that, let them know.
Good luck! Happy birthing!

Freaked me out too. But do what you can now with the vit E oil, as I did, and don't worry. I thought I had left it too late, but it all went well.

don't think it would make much difference at this stage of your pregnancy. i massaged my perineum for the last few months of my pregnancy, and it didn't help me at all. they ended up giving me an epesiotomy, so it didn't make any difference how well i'd looked after my perineum.
try not to worry about it too much. concentrate on trying to keep calm and focused. i'm sure it'll all be fine... and even if u do tear, it will heal, and the pain is totally worth it when u get to hold your baby for the first time. good luck.

Oh well someone suggested this to me, and I did it when pregnant with my first child. I started earlier than you too, but it made no difference anyway. I tore right across and needed stitching, which was done really badly by an idiot doctor that I wish I had sued. It cant be stretched that far really can it?

Soaking in a vitamin E enriched tubby is a good way to help prevent tearing too. And no, nothing is too late, or too little when it comes to not tearing.
Good luck!
